    pay peanuts get [whatever]
we deserved what we were able to afford
otherwise another davies type boring but solid player? we would have booed him too.
serge tried his best unfortunately not good enough
management - jm, poch, hitchen, levy - needs to take responsibility for persisting with and not being able to offload him
all the best serge - was entertaining !

Damning that no one came in for him, but wholly predictable, the fact we are canceling the contract shows any transfer fee would have been nominal yet no takers.

Apparently there have been several offers on the table during the summer, but he turned them down. Now he can pocket a nice sign on fee if anyone is still interested.

Farewell Serge. Thanks for the memories and games. Wish you well in future unless you play against Spurs.

How do you rate Lloris and his drink driving while in Spurs colours? Would you bring that up when it is time for Lloris to go?

Good move for us. Piles of wages off our books this window.

He wouldnt have played much with Emerson arriving and Tanganga emergence, so better to settle with him and let him go.

Lets hope Ndombele knuckles down now with one fewer clown in the squad

Just a bad smell in the place. Should have been brilliant with his physical ability. Best of luck elsewhere and hope you get that move to PSG, Lens or whoever else you were hanging on for.

That's why it's a risk. The players who are good enough to get us where we want to be but without risk are out of our price range.

    Good luck to him.

Went from being a player I really just wanted us to replace to a fairly consistent performer. Always put in a lot of effort on the pitch. People talk about Sissoko covering for him, but that was mostly a tactical thing. I don't quite get why Sissoko is/was loved for his effort, but Aurier wasn't, at least not in the same way.

Never shirked responsibility on the pitch, always willing to play with some risk. Not always the best decisions, but managed to improve.

Never fulfilled his potential, but he's been our best right back for quite a while. Played twice a week for a good stretch too, even returning very quickly to the team after a personal tragedy iirc.

Can understand us letting him go, he clearly wanted out and it seems like Nuno was happy to see him go.

I just hope we don't end up missing him.

On a related note my 9 year old nailed me on Sunday about this. I was having a pint and he was asking some questions about alcohol. Being a sanctimonious hypocrite I said "If you want to be a footballer, stay away from alcohol. You wouldn't catch Harry Kane drinking alcohol."

He replied "yeah but what about Lloris and you prefer him to Harry now."

Thanks Hugo - you allowed my son to hang me with my own words.

And now become an alcoholic at 9 years old ... I bet you gave him the keys on the way home too.

Ask him if he wants to be in goal or up front?

If we accept that argument, then there can only be a handful of teams around the world who will have a top quality central midfielder... I doubt that there are more than a dozen teams in Europe who have a superior price range to us. Yet there are scores of excellent creative midfielders around... it's just a case of better scouting and player evaluation to be able to identify the player early, when we can still afford him. Which is why I think the Sarr purchase is a watershed moment and hopefully will be followed by others in future windows.

I guess because he fairly consistently could be relied on to have a brain fart that would invariably result in a penalty or a goal opportunity for the opposition. Indeed Sissoko's covering was a tactical thing.... because it was obvious that Aurier was completely undisciplined and needed someone to cover his indiscretions and impulsiveness. And that is the difference between the two... as they say in medicine: first do no harm. Sissoko understood that; Aurier was too arrogant to comprehend it.

With a ceiling as high as Ndombele's?

There's probably not a dozen midfielders in the world with his potential.

Are you sure it wasn’t tactical?
I argued at the time that no manager would excuse his full backs from their basic duties but i was regularly told it was tactics….

Nobody disputes that. What I think @Lilbaz was alluding to was that we are not in the financial position to take a punt on a record transfer fee and a millstone of a weekly salary unless we are pretty sure the player will fit into the squad - no matter what potential ceiling they may have. Consider the flops of our 3 most recent record signings: Ndombele, Sanchez and the love of your life. There were alarm bells ringing all over the place.... Ndombele's past personal history, Sanchez targeted by Mourinho as Ajax's weakest link and I guess I need not extrapolate with you the feedback on Sissoko by Toon fans. This waste - more than anything - was the major reason for our rapid decline in the last three years. Hopefully this will be rectified from Paratici's more professional approach.

I think that the coaches just gave up trying to coach Aurier but they had no choice but to pick him because there was no decent option instead. Hence both Poch and Mourinho dropping him for spells but bringing him back in desperation - tweaking the team to cover for his massive flaws. And Nuno not wanting to touch with a 10 foot pole.
