Penalties

Probably between Keane & Sheringham recently, but I'd give it to Sheringham because he always seemed to miss them when playing against us! His first season at United and then for West Ham during the Lasagna game. And there's always Terry Fenwick!

I think Adebayor has scored all of his so far hasn't he? GHod our record was awful for a couple of seasons, I think Defoe had a three in eight record or something like that, which meant the likes of Huddlestone stepping up and missing.

How many penalty shoot-outs have we lost in a row now btw?

Not sure how many in a row but we haven't won a shoot out since we beat Peterborough in the FA Cup in Jan, 1994 to my recollection.

Since then we have definitely lost to Middlesborough, Liverpool, PSV amongst others on penalties.

Yes, that Peterborough one in 1994 seems to be the last win. In addition to those mentioned, we lost to Forest (FA Cup 1996), Singapore Lions (friendly 1995) and Partizan Belgrade (Kappa Cup 2004). We can't even win in the friendlies.

Don't forget Manchester United in the 2009 Football League Cup Final.

THFC6061 aka Statto.

You are a legend.

Just a simple question, do you have a job. If not OK, if you have one, how can you do these analysis .

Anyway may it carry on. I love your input into very OMT

COYS

Yes, I do have a job but running my footy stats site takes an ever-increasing amount of my time.

Daily Mail has Lineker (36th) ahead of Klinsmann (40th) in its list of Football's Greatest Penalty Kings, but that includes all clubs they played for.

Lineker was not really a good penalty taker, is he ? He has only scored 8 for us. And it was unforgivable the way he missed the penalty in the 1991 FA Cup Final. I would have hated Lineker forever if we had lost that Final. Fortunately for him, we went on to win that.

I have taken this stats from a Spurs website sometime back :

Blimey...so we only have one player on our books who has ever scored a penalty for the Club.
And only one other who has taken one? (yeah cheers, Clint)

Good job we don't have anyone who goes down too easily then 8-[

Edit: Ah...stats post above edited now, move on...

Where did you get that list?

My records have Clay scoring 37 goals in total, 36 of which were penalties. The exception is a goal listed in a tour game (5-0 against Berne in 1925). Neither Bob Goodwin or Topspurs list this as a penalty, although this might just be due to an incomplete record. I'd also note that that list seems to exclude friendlies, except for Clay.

Edit: And while writing this post my question is answered by Spur of the moment. Talk about a Spur for the moment.

Now can see why Bale didn't take the penalty against Norwich. He had missed his only penalty so far, against Werder Bremen !

Defoe has scored 5 but have missed 6. Adebayor has a better record, scoring 5 and missing 1.

But when Adebayor doesn't play, who is going to be our regular penalty taker ? Surely, we cannot rely on Defoe or Dempsey. Anyone else who is a proven penalty taker ?

Huddlestone is missing from that list. Sure he missed a pen a couple of seasons back. Bolton away?

A striking feature of that penalty list is that two of the top penalty takers were right-backs (Clay, Ramsey).

It doesn't make sense that strikers have first claim to penalties. The qualities that make a good striker - instinct, rapid reaction - are not good qualities for a penalty taker. Someone with a calmer more deliberate approach is more suitable.

Did he ? When was that ? Can't remember it. IIRC, the only penalty he has taken is against PSV Eindhoven in the penalty shootout in UEFA quarter final in 2008/09.
