I think Alder's just hit his Dawson moment, where he is no longer able to play in a high line. Though if he moves to Italy or a deep defending team like Chelsea, he'll be fine for years longer

I get that Toby may be looking less focused than a couple of seasons back but don't think we should be judging him too harshly on how he's playing right now.

Most if not all defenders have at least one dodgy season, especially if/when following long injury spells. But usually they do eventually get back to something like their best. Maybe they get a bit slower, but often that's more than compensated for by greater maturity, experience and judgment. In fact with CBs it's not uncommon for them to have their very best years in their early thirties.

In other words too soon to pension him off just yet. Maybe he just needs a good long run of games to work right back up to his best. Hopefully whilst with us!

A 1-0 or two goal win will give us the edge in the tie breakers if needed against Inter.

Are we sure about the 1-0 because I don't think it's as simple as adding the two scores up and if level, then being separated by the away goals rule.

You'd think it would be like that because obviously that's how the knock out rounds are done but I'm sure from my championship manager days from yesteryear, inters 2-1 win is simply taken as being better than our 1-0 win (if we do indeed win 1-0) because they scored more goals in their win than we did in our win.

It's important also because if I'm correct, a 3-2 win for us would also be enough to lead the head to head.

Would be good to get this cleared up.

Do I really have to post this again? Looks like it....
Just to make it clear:
Teams that finish level on points in the Champions League group stage are sorted by the following criteria:

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  5. Goal difference in all group matches;
  6. Goals scored in all group matches;
  7. Away goals scored in all group matches;
  8. Wins in all group matches;
  9. Away wins in all group matches;
  10. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  11. UEFA club coefficient.

1-0 will do, 3-2 won't do as they would then be ahead on head-to-head away goals. So you are not correct.

Well now, heres a question. Would we offer him one?

Or, more specifically, one he would see fit to sign?

I would imagine we would go back and offer the same terms rumoured, but we are in just a stronger position for him to accept.
Be good to keep him as part of a succession plan, however we have played it well in that IF we lose him it doesnt feel so catastrophic

Honestly I dont know that I have an answer, I think much would depend on Poch and how important (or not) he thinks Alderweireld is to the next few seasons.

I could see us offering a package some way below our top tier, and him not thinking thats good enough.
Im not sure we will be that ready to throw big bucks at him.

Thanks Igor!

That probably explains why on occasion I went out of the groups when I thought I should have gone through, thinking the game was bugged :D

Were you near the three who celebrated their goal, and then had a row with a Spurs fan three rows in front before the stewards escorted them back into the away fans then? I was on the row behind them behind the goal with my sons. Difficult to hear any Spurs over the noise of PSV... although I joined in with the Yid Army chants... there were two lads trying to lead those choruses consistently throughout the game so I guess one of them was you... row 17?

We must have been close!

We were row 12, and moved for the second half. It wasn't fun listing to PSV! Watched from behind the goal that Spurs attacked both halfs :) To get round the stadium, we slid through the media section. Despite the lack of chanting it's still awesome. Had a great night.

There were times when people finally got a sing-song going, but its all out of time and flounders quickly. Add in quite a few season ticket holders missing games now, a number of others who re not regulars taking the oppotunity for tickets, tourists seeing a game while on holiday, the big spread out bowl...can't wait for the new stadium.

Glory glory needs a Chants thread stickied, with chants, vids, new song suggestions. So we can do our bit to ensure the new stadium is rocking. PSV away fans showed what can be done. Imagine for a moment, their level of support - or even half their level of support - all over the stadium!

I don’t mind having away fans near me, it can be interesting chatting with them. Moreso for European games obviously.

I just can't see Inter losing to this PSV team though. PSV have some decent players, but overall, they're just not very good. I reckon it's Euro league for us after x-mas.
They were lucky to beat them in Holland, so I wouldn't put it past them to get a result in Italy.

I think it adds to the atmosphere as well. My best trips to White Hart Lane have been the times I've been stood in the Park Lane right next to the away fans and where the fans have been battle-singing back and forth.

Hopefully you're right. I weren't impressed with them against us either, but they have that damn Icardi, he's lethal.

Inter are a much better team now than when we played them 4/6 weeks ago. They remind me a bit of us last season in the CL, lucked a couple of results early doors and then just grew in confidence.

I actually like the fact that we would need to beat Barca at the Camp Nou to qualify. This is what CL is all about. The results against Real last year were great, but they were not do-or-die games. This one will be and coming through would be massive in terms of the belief that this will instill in the squad for the knockout rounds. No draw would faze us.

I've got a nagging feeling Alderweireld is coasting through games, when we need him to put his body on the line and lead the defence. Unfortunately, we don't have other options at the moment.

Last night was the first time I was pretty sure that was the case. He played some decent diagonals but he looked distinctly half-hearted when it came to defending.
