Free header, that late Hugo save, a number of last ditch blocks, de Brauner shooting wide/over, the handball goal. We defended well in numbers. Would be nice to use the ball better so we reduce the time defending. Can’t fault our performance but we’re not the finished article. Lots more to come.

And we’ve got Matt Doherty (when he’s out of quarantine) who has played RCB for his country.

Free header from 20 yards... rarely if ever scored. 2 great defensive blocks (defending defending). De Britney spanking several shots over as they got more frustrated

That’s how I saw it certainly
I saw city huff abs puff and create nothing
They had an XG of 2 after 22 shots... that’s really poor
Jose ha as system where he lets the opposition create nothing of quality and expects our players to take their chances of a better quality

this was Better football than anything they created and it was all quick quality passing

Mentioned this move in the post this morning. Impossible without Ndombele. He just allows us to open things up.

The speed we move the ball is so much better now.

As I posted in the OMT, it's the way you almost 'obviously' play against City.

They will pass you to death, give them even more space to pass, you are 400% dying. This then works for you going the other way. It gives us space. City always give away chances. We have deadly chance takers.

They could always have a day when things go for them BUT I would say we are a bad match up for them.

They definitely have dropped a bit in quality since Silva left and Aguero, Fernandiho are absent.

It's how we played when we beat them at their place in the league a few years back, conceded possession and scored a couple of excellent counter attacking goals - we didn't keep them out at the back as well as we did yesterday mind

It reminded me of when we used to play Arsenal during peak Wenger..gut wrenching as they have so much possession and movement. Constantly just trying to cope on a basic level.

In fact yesterday wasn't quite as bad, especially second half.

The thing is, id predict, if every team allowed us to play on the counter...we would win the league. If Leicester can do it with 1 deadly finisher...we have 3!

Yeah I think that's a good post. It is the way to obviously play against them but my fondest memories of supporting the club are when Poch's teams used to swarm all over the opposition and we'd kill them with wave after wave of attack. So this takes a bit of getting used to but it absolutely makes sense. And we did look particularly dangerous any time we broke even though it didn't always result in a chance.

Good point on Silva, Aguero and Fernandino too. Especially the first two. Peak Silva and Aguero were fabulous players who could produce that bit of magic against any team. They don't have replacements in the same league (albeit Aguero isn't done yet).

And what the fudge did Torres do to deserve a 7? He'll be lucky to get out of Aurier's pocket in time for next weekend!

I know it's a game of opinions but Kane and Dier a 7? fudge sake...how do you get paid for this drivel because you clearly don't need to know anything about football.

And Hugo a 9? He was good but aside from the save from the header towards the end, what did he do to deserve that?

I’d add Kompany to the players who were vital to City’s success and have not been replaced by Fraudiola. It’s all well and good having a defining style of play but if it still boils down to having a world class spine of inherited players than I feel the success of the club is in spite of the manager, not because of him. It’s interesting that city have trusted him to oversee a rebuild, as his signings to date, with very little in the way of financial constraint would not inspire confidence. It feels like he is seen as the reason Messi will join and I’m not sure how he solves the (relative) on pitch problems they have.

Agree. I would say it is all a bit bizarre BUT people with a bottomless pit of money can be like that as cash is the so called problem solver. It's quite refreshing in football that cash has been reasonably proven to not be the be all and end all. Pep really has had an easy path everywhere he's been, he is a good manager but I wouldn't say his skillset is very wide. Plus I think he does have a character that you might get sick of (as a player).

Have you seen all or nothing the city one?
The players non-figuratively wait for every word he says like he is a messiah
They believed everything he said and put it into practice on the pitch. Repeating the same thing though would get very tedious for players. We all need to what different voices at times otherwise it gets boring and stale and that city’s problem now. We had it with Poch IMO. Unless you freshen things they deteriorate

I wonder if not having fans in the stadium during this transition in style, is a blessing in disguise? All the moaning and shouting 'attack' wouldn't be helpful. Everyone can now get used to it on TV before returning to the ground.

On the flip side against better teams we're likely to spend more time in a low block. Which suits Alderweireld for example. Extended periods where concentration, positioning, awareness and marking are so important to get right every time. Doesn't fit Sanches particularly well.

Us having the ball loads having to defend against sporadic counter attacks with space for opponents to run into seems more suitable to Sanches. Though his shortcomings on the ball becomes more of an issue.

That's the difference. Yes they had chances and probably should have had at least one goal based on the chances they created. But we weren't carved open repeatedly like we have been in the past.

Part of that is probably that City are some way off the quality they've been in the past, but part of it is that we're defending much better.

These games can go any way. But we have a very clear way of winning them, and that's good to see.
