Moussa Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko can't guarantee staying with Tottenham long-term.

The France midfielder admits he's had "calls" from rival clubs.

He told Bein Sport: "Am I going to stay here? I do not know. My contract here ends in 2023.

"I could tell you yes, but we know that everything goes very quickly in football. I try to have the best possible season with my club. At the end of the year, there is the Euros and I hope to be there.

"External things, I let my agent take care of them. There have been calls from different clubs, but I remain focused on Tottenham.

We can but pray. [emoji1545]

Sissoko is likely to go at summer, I don't think the club will push it (probably fine with him as squad option) but

- We are not going to renew/extend his contract at his age
- Him leaving will free up a non-HG slot in squad
- He, like Jan did, will probably want the security of a 3 year type deal at this point in his career
- More competition for his spot likely next season (even if it's just bringing Skipp back), so he would see less playing time than ever

Henderson is better than Dier. Sanchez and Dier are better CBs than Sissoko is a CM. Albeit not particularly good CBs as evidenced this season and last but still better at doing their jobs than Sissoko is at doing his.
I think they are even worse but we all have our own opinions

If Sissoko goes this summer (as I think is both likely and sensible) then we absolutely need to buy another CM for the squad (and that doesn't mean Skipp coming back as he should be replacing Winks in our squad).

But where would you get a Sissoko replacement from, how do you replace..
  • That first touch
  • The ability to point in both directions at once
  • The natural skill to position yourself in such a way that you can't be passed to
  • The way he pings the ball straight back to the person passing the ball at 10 times the speed (or is that covered under first touch)
  • Those slaloming runs
  • The ability to run back very fast to cover the position he should have been in to begin with

Its going to be a tall order guys

(boy am I going to catch brick from his fan club over this :D)

I'd replace both Winks and Sissoko. Neither are good enough and neither are good squad players.

We need to do a lot of business in the next transfer window.... Potentially 5 or 6 first team quality players (GK, 2 x CB, 1 x WF, 1 x CM and/or 1 x AM) as well as ensuring we have a decent backup for Kane.

GK
Lloris - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - definitely.
Hart - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - no.
1 first team player needed

RB
Aurier - good enough for first team - yes.
Doherty - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - probably.
Tanganga - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - probably.
Not a priority (though Aurier needs a new contract as he has 1 year left this summer).

LB
Reguilion - good enough for first team - yes.
Davies - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - no.
Sessegnon - good enough for first team - probably. Good enough for backup - yes.
Not a priority

CB
Toby - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - probably
Sanchez - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable
Dier - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable
Rodon - good enough for first team - who knows? Good enough for backup - who knows?
2 first team players needed (maybe even a back up as well)

CM
PEH - good enough for first team - yes.
Ndombele - good enough for first team - yes.
Sissoko - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable
Winks - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable.
Skipp - good enough for first team - who knows? Good enough for backup - probably.
1 first team type player needed (maybe even a back up as well)

AM
Dele - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - yes.
Lamela - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable.
Lo Celso - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - yes.
1 first team player needed

WF
Son - good enough for first team - yes.
Moura - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - yes.
Bergwijn - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - yes.
Clarke - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable
Bale - good enough for first team - no. Good enough for backup - debatable (and not worth it on those wages)
1 first team player needed.

ST
Kane - good enough for first team - yes.
Vinicius - good enough for first team - debatable. Good enough for backup - maybe.
1 backup player needed (whether that is signing Vinicius or somebody else).

Disagree on Lo Celso as I think he is first team material.

He showed this last season, otherwise I broadly agree with @Finney Is Back assessments.

Realistically there are too many areas that need to be addressed so we need to prioritise and the centre of defense seems to make the most sense especially if neither Rodon nor Tangana assume a starting role by the end of the season.

That's the statement that matters, we could argue re need vs. want, but too many of these lists seem to be fantasy.

Need to be upgraded -> Sanchez, Dier, Sissoko (first team)
Wrong end of career (either this summer or next) -> Toby, Lloris

That's it, outside of that
- HG balance planning needs to happen, hence outbound is almost as important as incoming
- Managing the financially possible (e.g. we might sell Winks & Dele for the income regardless of capability)
- Being opportunistic (the Reguilon type opps)

The conversation about upgrading/replacing Gio, Vinicius, Bergwijn or making a decision on Skipp, Rodon, Sessegnon, Tanganga this summer just isn't remotely realistic, not going to happen. Those are multi-year decisions.

I would be amazed if we buy 5 or 6 players for the starting line up this summer. I just do not see that happening.

I'm not sure we need it to be honest. When you're down, everyone thinks you're further away than you really are. When you're up, you think you're better than you are.

I don't disagree with much @Finney Is Back has written. But you don't solely need top, top players to win the league. United got by with Fletcher, O'Shea, Brown for years. Good pros but not great players. Chelsea had a few ordinary ones in their squad. Liverpool have had the likes of Milner, Henderson, Matip, Gomez and a few others that I wouldn't consider at the same level as their great players.

We definitely need a CB or two. Maybe a CM. Other than that, we have a pretty strong squad. I know Hugo is getting it at the moment but I still have confidence in him and he'd be 4th or 5th on the list that needs replacing for me. And, as you say, I can't see us splashing the cash of 4 or 5 top players.

I agree, if we want to push on next season we do not need to make massive change ( if we do it will mean another season of unimpressive results while players settle and fans moaning yet again). I also agree that not every team has to be full of top players to succeed, it needs a mixture.

I would like to think we would bring in another keeper as imo Lloris is fading fast, another CB is a must and after that see what left in the kitty.

They were not great players
But you knew what you were getting with them as they were consistent
You can allow for that then
Sissoko is another for us who is a consistent player you know what you will get from
There actually worth having as squad players, but not regular starters

It's not about disagreeing if it was City or Chelsea, when you overlay Spurs reality and Covid .. it's prioritization

Bare minimum could be two first team players purchased, a top CB and CM
- Hope would be the Top CB could help make a functioning unit with one of Rodon, Tanganga, Toby
- A quality CM that could fit in the PEH, Ndombele +1 or rotate with one of them.

If you were desperate, you could sink all our money in the CB (one first team purchase)
- sell Sanchez, Dele, Winks, Sissoko to get money and free up two non HG slots
- Bring in Skipp, rotate Skipp, Gio and Lamela (he's shown he can work there) with the PEH & Ndombele combo
- Bring in Sessegnon and rotate with Reguilon, Davies acting as utility cover for either RB/CB

Ideal (but not fantasy) would probably be
- CB, CM, Keeper to challenge Lloris (3 purchases)
- A few upcoming/opportunistic buys
