Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier says he has had to develop his game since joining Tottenham in the summer, but he feels he is improving quickly under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino.

The 25-year-old right-back, who arrived from Burnley for £3.5million in June, initially struggled and made defensive errors in his first three Europa Leagues games against FK Qarabag, Monaco and Anderlecht in Brussels.

However, his performances have got better and he marked his first Premier League start for Tottenham at Watford on Monday by setting up Heung-Min Son’s late winner as the Lilywhites triumphed 2-1 and moved up to third place in the table.

“It was a bit difficult at the start, moving down here, but all the lads, the staff and the people around made me feel so welcome,” said Trippier.

“I’ve spoken to a few of the boys. Walks [Kyle Walker] came from Sheffield so we’ve got a great relationship, the same as all the other players. I talk to the lads and they’re making me feel so settled.

“I’m adapting quickly to the style of play here and what the manager needs of me, and all I can do is give my best when I’m called upon.

“There are a lot of things [I’ve had to adapt to] - playing out from the back and getting forward, playing as a winger at times. Sometimes it’s different to what the manager at Burnley wanted me to do but I’m enjoying every moment that I get and I’ll do my best.

“Since the first training session, you pick up things so quickly with this manager it’s unbelievable, and with the players you’re playing with every week it can only benefit you and help you to get better.

“I’m not playing every week but I try to do well every day in training and impress, and the manager believed in me to play in this game and give a good performance, and the most important thing is we got the three points and it’s pushed us further up the table.”

Pochettino tends to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the full-backs providing much of the width. However, he opted to play with three centre-backs at Watford in a bid to combat the Hornets’ 4-4-2 system, and that gave Trippier even more licence to attack.

He embraced that role and put in a number of dangerous deliveries, with Harry Kane heading wide of the near post before substitute Son met an 89th-minute cross with a backheeled flick past ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

“I just want to get forward as much as I can and get as many balls into the box as possible for H [Kane] and whoever’s on the end of it,” said Trippier. “I was happy to get an assist but most importantly we got the points because it’s not an easy place to come to. It was a great finish but that’s no surprise from Sonny because he does it in training every day, with the skills he’s got.

“It’s a massive victory, coming to Watford, who have been on a good run, so we’re all full of confidence and the belief is high in the dressing room.

“It just shows the energy we’ve got as a team - even playing against 10 men, because it’s not easy. With the fitness, the mentality and the belief we’ve got, we thought and we knew we could win the game and we got the last-minute winner and the three points.

“We just want to take it game by game and this was another marker and a statement so we’ll enjoy this victory and get ready for Everton next Sunday.”

Some fantastic stuff in this that I think gives an insight into how good things are at the club currently. I was particularly pleased to read the following:

I said it was interesting not that I agreed with it :)

I like Harry Kane but the 5th most expensive player in the world, really? More expensive than Bale? Yeah right

Exactly. Id love to know their formulas as it looks like a crock of brick to me

Alli now would be worth about £50m on their logic

Its actually quite amazing just how much of a better footballer Trippier is than Walker. Seriously comfortable on the ball, and able to whip in some brilliant crosses.

We have a really good blend of full backs: two quick players, both slightly rash, who give you incredible energy getting up and down the pitch; and two players who aren't as quick but who are technically superior.

I understand that we don't really have first choice full backs - although Poch is only now beginning to rotate Trippier and Walker on a regular basis - but it wouldn't shock me if in the not too distant future Davies and Trippier get the nod in the bigger games.

Walker is a much more physical player.

Re who gets the nod, I wonder if Poch knows/believes he asks so much of his FBs, that he will constantly rotate for rest, and form at time will determine who plays in big games.

To me Trippier is a better fit for the "smaller games". Games where we have more possession and he can get forward and use his crossing ability. Also games where we dominate possession and his ability on the ball is more important.

Walker to me is a significantly better defender, particularly one on one. Against top wide players (in big games) I think he's a better choice than Trippier.

Also worth mentioning the age thing. Walker, Trippier and Rose are all 25. All likely to improve a bit, but huge improvements aren't that likely. Davies at 22 is perhaps more likely to push on from where he is and claim a starting spot (compared to Trippier).

I don't think Trippier is nearly as good defensively as Walker is at the moment though.

I agree. Trippier hasn't been tested yet for us by any really quality. He is a good wing back type and suits dominant games where teams defend deep as he puts more pressure on them with his crosses

Walker is better (so far) against faster technical players but trippier hasn't had that chance for us

what a pass from Alli with the outside of the boot...Well done Trippier for being up with the play...

I think Walker would be the better choice tbh.

Trippier is excellent against packed defences, but we could do with Walker's strength and pace in defence against City.
I agree
Trip pier suits teams that's sit deep as his crossing causes them to have to defend deeper and soak pressure

Against a team that will actually attack us I think walker offers more all round

Although i would say that city can't defend crosses to save there life

You have a point. But Trippier's crossing causes far more problems than Walker's hit-and-hope efforts.

It's an interesting conundrum. Problem is we haven't had to see tripper defend yet and his offer going forward has been very good

His crossed against a defence that can't deal with crosses could be huge

Would expect the usual rotation to continue. Walker against City and Palace and Trippier against Fiorentina.

a week until city away so which full backs will play?

I reckon he might go Davies & Walker...pft who knows...we have amazing options at fb...

Navas plays on the right, doesn't he? If he's fit, he sort of balances out City's wonky formation: he will be a threat coming down the touchline. Whoever plays RB will be offered more room to roam than Rose/Davies, who I think will be tasked with stopping Navas from running into space (if he plays).
