Injuries Thread

Can’t find a blog doing regular updates on days lost to injury per club but stumbled across this article from early February which confirms that we had the most out of our peers...

https://www.jltspecialty.com/media-...ubs-hit-by-spike-in-world-cup-player-injuries

Premier League Clubs have seen a 44% increase in injuries to players who competed in last summer’s World Cup in Russia, according to new research from specialist insurance broker and risk consultant JLT Specialty (JLT).

With England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli both out injured, Tottenham are one of the top six that have been badly affected by the World Cup, seeing a total of 931 days out for all players, the second highest behind West Ham (1,156 days).

Surprised this thread isn't longer. Had we merged all the injury talk from other threads into this one, we'd be looking at 1000 pages. At least.

Id love to see some proper analysis on this.

Not only have we suffered extensive injuries, we have suffered them to the worst people at the worst time.

Its been like the universe is against us!

Would also be interesting to see analysis of the effect on squad members involved in the WC, especially those who reached the SF compounded by the burden of additional games resulting from reaching two SFs this season.

One thing not ever considered is how many of our players have played for three seasons with no break. We have the highest concentration of regular internationals in the Premier I think (five consistently in the England squad to start)...it takes it's toll.

Seemed like half our squad were in the WC semis in the summer (and consequent 3rd/4th play off).

Son, Kane, Dier (and the rest) - just how much football have they had the last few seasons?

A proper summer where they can actually fully recover and build fitness will be incredible for the team IMO.

I still think Poch needs to rotate more, for example Kane plays every game, even if he's not fully fit. It feels like we flog our players too much.

Certainly could do with fresher legs in midfield...

@WindyCOYS:

“Minutes numbers are fascinating. These are out of a possible 4860 (54 matches):

Alderweireld: 4048
Eriksen 3769
Lloris 3589
Kane 3252
Son 3069
Sissoko 3067
Davinson 2932
Trippier 2913
Lucas 2878
Vertonghen 2718
Dele 2657
Winks 2651
Davies 2604
Rose 2301
Dier 1777

I doubt there are many midfielders who have played as many minutes as Christian Eriksen. Liverpool's CM with the most minutes is Wijnaldum, 3367, then Milner 2601, Fabinho 2466. That depth allows much more rotation. Bernardo has played 3755 for City, another amazing effort.”

That not depth, that’s luck with injuries

Sure we would have rotated more if players had been fit to rotate in

The fact that Kane/Dele/Son/eriksen have only been available together for 10 games all season makes you realise how injuries have made it impossible to rest players

And yes that lack of a rest can lead to more injuries but what’s the alternative?

Jack Grealish.

It’s bad luck and it’s also lack of depth. We don’t have any backup for Eriksen and we rely on him way too much for creativity.

As mentioned above Kane rarely gets a break besides when he has usual ankle injury after Xmas.

The one area rotates too much is the back four. Next season I hope he plays Toby, Jan, Rose and hopefully Wan Bisaka/anyone but Trippier and sticks with them for most of the games.

Jack Grealish.

Wouldn’t be my first choice but I’d take him. Not sure why some posters have a suspicious attitude towards transfers now. As if signing one player is going to potentially hurt the dynamic and team spirit of the squad. Why bother signing anyone again if that’s the case?

Grealish appeared to be the player we were most linked to. And when we dint’t sign anyone in the summer many posters on here moaned about the lack fo activity - when the ‘activity’ we were linked to was Grealish. He might come good if he can stop with the laughing gas for more than a year.

People asked questions about the lack of activity because signing no players just doesn’t happen very often. We’ve got to where we are in spite of no signings not because of it. If it were some masterstroke then everyone would do it. Seems odd that people have almost turned on a player we nearly signed though. Like I said, not my first choice but I wouldn’t be against signing him. We’ve had unprecedented levels of injured this season so it would be wrong to point to our lack of transfers alone as the reason for the slump in our league form but a bigger squad would have helped at this stage of the season.

Anyway, this is the injures thread so don’t want to derail it. Let’s just hope we don’t pick up any more for the last 2/3 games.

Yes we’ve been unlucky with Dier, Dele and Kane’s lay-offs but we knew that Son would away on international duty for weeks on end (which thankfully proved to be worthwhile now he’s gained exemption) plus Lamela, Wanyama, Dembele and Winks have had chronic injury problems which we can only hope improve following surgery.

Thankfully Sissoko is filling the void left by Dembele’s decline & departure but we have no other ball playing midfielders to cover for Winks. Clearly Pochettino doesn’t think that Skipp is ready for the first team yet, as he keeps playing Dele and Rose in CMF instead.

Dunno how much truth there is in us turning down Tielemans, as he looks like a good prospect, but fingers crossed that this weekend’s results go in our favour so that CL spot is secured; which should help Levy secure new recruits early enough to undergo a full pre-season!

It’s also bad prep.

We all knew on here half the squad would be shattered after the World Cup and players like Wanyama/Lamela/Dembele are walking injuries plus Janssen and Nkoudou are not going to get much of a look in.
