    Re: Dos Santos

He was a tidy little player when we had him but like alot of our promising players, he didn't get the chance.

Mexican keeper outstanding value will go up after this World Cup.
Brazils Bernard is a clever little player, puts in a good shift, and very selfless.

Mexican keeper is a free agent at the moment. You should never sign anyone on the back of an outstanding international tournament though.

    Re: Dos Santos

15 apps in 4 seasons is classed as plenty of chances? i'm pretty sure he did not have a run of games eithers. Any player who does not get a run of games has not really been given a chance IMO.

    Re: Dos Santos

Showing up for training on a regular basis would have been a start.

'He let himself down last year,' said Redknapp. 'He wasn't in good shape, he didn't look after himself. Now he's fitter, leaner and has great ability.

'I've spoken to his mum and dad, they came to see me. I told them he had a big chance and they said he had off the field issues and didn't do himself any favours.

'The penny has dropped, about applying himself and adapting himself. He found it hard to get into training on time, and different stuff. He's realised he can't do that here, he's toed the line.'

I think it's generally accepted that the change "didn't stick", at least not while he was in London. For whatever reason it seems - at that time and place in his life - he wasn't willing to give Spurs his total commitment. Or even very much of his commitment. Which is a shame because he showed glimpses of being a very decent player indeed, and may well still develop into one (I don't know if he has or not, I've not really followed his career since he left us).

I agree with you that 15 appearances over four years and no regular spell in the side means he didn't really "get a chance" at Spurs. But from what seems to have gone on, that was very much the player's own fault. If you can't be relied upon to show up for training, you can't be relied upon to play a regular role in the first team. Simple as. Management 101.

Dos Santos has always been one of those players that plays better for country than club.

Part of it is, what looks like a motivation/commitment issue, sad, because we spotted him early and if he applied himself, he could be playing for Madrid now ...

Someone should tell the Villarreal coach that. He has had an exceptional season.

I think it was recognised from early on in his career that his determination was always lacking. He played some great games for Barcelona before he joined us, yet they then sell a bright prospect like him for around £4.5mil? I think Barca always knew he'd fail. Purely guess work of course

I think, more than anything, he was always a bad fit for Redknapp's system. He simply isn't a winger in a 4-4-2 formation. He's not a Bale (under Harry), Lennon, or Townsend — he's very much an outside forward in a 4-3-3 or to a lesser extent a 4-2-3-1. I think Lamela is a good comparison to him (Lamela is much more talented, IMO), and if you stick either of those guys on the touch-line, they are wasted.

I'm Mexican by descent, so I've seen a lot of Dos Santos, and I think he'd be successful in Pochetino's system. That said, I wouldn't want to bring him in b/c I wouldn't want to block Lamela's development.

I think, for all his strengths, Redknapp was pretty rigid tactically. There are a handful of potentially very good players (GDS, The Ghetto Prince, Kranjcar and Pienaar to some extent) that Redknapp didn't really know how to use, as they didn't fit into his two wingers, two forwards, two midfielders identity. He never really played with a #10, except for Rafa, who really is more of a second striker than a pure #10. It look Redknapp a long time to feel comfortable w/ Luka down the middle, and in a lot of ways, Bale didn't really make that quantum leap, until AVB's tactical flexibility gave him that free role to move into.

In short, I'm not advocating we sign GDS, but I certainly don't see him as a failure. He got 1 in 3 for Villareal this season, and in a team that plays to his strength, he's a quality player in a decent team.

Yeah - apparently Ledley always used to be late when he was younger (David Lee's dad told me once) - you can be laid back but still committed.
