Franco Baldini

and your point is?:)

i was half joking, but if you look at German clubs they tend to appoint ex players in these types of roles so why cant we.

how about David Ginola then;) Has been involved in transfers-tick.....played abroad-tick.....has contacts at big european clubs-tick...is a handsome devil and expert schmoozer -big tick

Why not a specialist DoF with a proven track record? Both Cortese and Monchi are currently available and have excellent reputations and networks.

Monchi is still at Sevilla i think and turned down Barcelona in the summer too....he is happy where he is

Cortese would never be able to work with Levy. Both too headstrong

I'm sure I read the other day that Monchi had left Seville, but you are right

With a scouting setup in place and the academy doing well, do we really need a replacement DoF atm? Get someone in to do the leg work on deals and schmoozing of potential signings/agents etc (if there isn't already someone here who can do that) and we're possibly set, may even be the reason we've parted ways

Clubs are huge multi hundred of million dollar businesses that require a lot of people to execute a strategy/plan/operation for.

Fans get hung up on the naming of roles and their own pre-conceived views of what a title means. Fact is managers will never again control all things at the club, all that is important is that the roles around the manager work with the manager to enable them to have the best chance of success.

We don't need a DoF per se, but there will always be use for someone like that. You hire someone like him because he possesses a unique skill set (contacts, experience, schmoozing ability) and you give him a title (ie. technical director), but there was more to his job than simply signing players. If we found someone else with similar credentials we'd probably look to bring him in. It's the same with other non-exec directors we have, they are there to provide knowledge and experience on important matters (currently the stadium).

Don't get me wrong I'm a BIG fan of that type of setup, all im saying is do we need to replace Baldini or are his duties being shared around elsewhere?

I suspect there will be additional hires (maybe more than one), will they be a direct Baldini replacement? we probably will never know.

I personally think that we do need someone to replace only on the basis that someone with a contact book can do wonders in speeding things up and also helping in getting rid of players. Whilst there are superagents etc.... they are also very expensive and acting in self-interest rather than in the interests of the club. The question is who is out there to do it. My knowledge of DoFs around the world is low, but what was interesting in the press release was that the club did not say they were looking for a replacement, which would indicate that we probably won't get someone.

Since it was the worst kept secret that he was going, I'm sure we have had more than adequate time to decide how/if he well be replaced (and more importantly, how/if that will be messaged).

Since the media try to create imaginary agendas in the UK between manager/DoF and who has power, who actually buys, did the manager want x player .. I wouldn't be surprised if we replace Baldini, use a different title and never let the general public/media know that in fact this person is Baldini's replacement.

Hadn't thought of it like that and think you have a point. About time we became a bit more savvy to the media!

Good points. Most teams in the Premier League have someone carrying out the role now but most do not get the flack in the press that we do for it.

Is it because we introduced the 'hated' model to this country? Was Venables in 1992 the first?

The club never said that. Goal.com said that.

To my eyes, Mitchell, MacKenzie and Metcalf look like peers heading up parallel teams. Their job titles are all 'Head of..', compared to Baldini who was a Director.

I think people overstate Mitchell's role, because he came from Southampton (where he also used to report to their DoF, Les Reed). He's obviously brilliant with all his data and stuff, but he's also only in his early 30s and not that long out of playing (I appreciate Comolli was very young to become DoF too, but he'd been working as a scout since his early/mid-20s).

I must have misremembered it, you are right that the club statement does not mention reporting lines.

I think that we are in a sweet spot for the press. Big enough that stories about us sell copy but not quite big enough to have regular success. If ours and Chelsea's positions were swapped, I think that the coverage would be too.
