Federico Fazio

Espanyol close in on Tottenham defender Federico Fazio

The Pericos are looking to continue their summer activity with a move for the Argentine

It seemed as if Espanyol had eased off in their search for new defender, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

The Barcelona-based club have made big strides this week in a move for Tottenham centre-back Federico Fazio.

Talks with the player are at an advanced stage and it seems the transfer could be completed soon, with the English club keen to move the Argentine on.

The player has given his OK to the Pericos regarding a four-year deal and they must now reach an agreement with Spurs.

Espanyol president Chen Yansheng was in London this week, accompanied by CEO Ramon Robert, to talk about the deal.

Fazio is the club's primary target in defence and the club are keen to tie the deal up as soon as possible.

Tottenham paid 10 million euros for him two summers ago, but he's failed to adapt to English football and spent last season back on loan at Sevilla.

Espanyol's second option was Diego Llorente, who was offered to them by Real Madrid, but the young defender has now moved on loan to Malaga.

I just came across this article from February whilst looking to see if there was any news about his move to Espanyol.
According to Fazio, he was put out on loan due to "off-field issues".
Federico Fazio has claimed that he was forced to leave Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window to return on loan to Sevilla until the end of the season after being exiled at Spurs due to "off-field" issues.

No indication of what they were. I don't remember hearing anything like this at the time?

As of yesterday Football Insider is quoting Mundo Deportivo as reporting that Fazio has agreed personal terms with Espanyol but the clubs have not yet been able to agree a transfer fee. Sports Witness are saying that it might result in another loan deal with Espanyol taking on Fazio's full salary, and with an option to buy.

Poch actually signed him. But at least it shows he's willing to admit when he's made a mistake and amend it.
That's what I like about him, he's unlike many managers who stick with a player despite them not fitting in, better to admit to a mistake and sort it out than trying to justify a signing by continuing to play them.
