European Super League - Dead on arrival

How so?

I still like the idea and if Barca are the last drop out and it goes ahead, I’ll be delighted, even more delighted as we add city and Chelsea to the clubs that will get fudged over.

You're alright Galeforce you embrace that side of things and always have done

I want what’s best for Spurs, what makes our future most financially secure, what gives us a chance of winning the biggest prizes.

Great. This wasn’t it. It never fudging was. Levy was the guy but now he is diminished.

Wonder what the negative repercussions of this will be? The quick climb-down may nip anything long lasting in the bud, but potentially this could hurt us in the short tetm

We'll go back through the previous arguments if I reply properly to that.

It looks like its over now. The good thing from this week is that we have Mourinho out, so I'm in a happier place with Spurs than I was on Sunday morning!

yep happy about all of this to be honest. Hated the idea of the superleague and levy’s part in it.

Us supporters/ fans legacy fans, we’re all about supporting the team on the pitch. Our views on the off the pitch bit can differ but that ain’t really important. Let’s move on from this already yesterday’s news.

coys.

Looks like, along with the other 5, next season we will find a host of other teams who will be 'upping' their game against us, as well as the usual suspects

I think we just witnessed an epic failed hustle that will see several owners hounded out of the game.

So much for business acumen.

The mistake they made was going too big too soon. They could have come together and bent UEFA over a table with some threats and hoovered up more CL money. Not that I'd like to see that - the game is too heavily weighted towards the big clubs as it is. Now they may have to go back with their tales between their legs over something that was never going to fly with the fans because of how anti-competitive it was. I've no real sympathy for anyone involved - us included.

We'll probably be the last ones standing and still finish second.

I don’t think this reflects badly on him at all, we only had two options, join the breakaway or go out of business.

He had to do what he had to do but that will not stop the pressure from mounting on him - this will be used to ramp up the anti Enic/Levy sentiment

There was not join the breakaway and not go out of business. Also, join the breakaway AND still go out of business - which is the option I personally feared and envisaged.

Yeah I can understand that, indeed I think it’s a totally valid point in and of itself. (Though I think the response should be to distribute money more evenly to clubs outside of the competition).

But virtually everyone seems to be talking about owner greed etc, which feels like a different point.

It is commercialism over sport imo. Putting how a business functions over free competition. Owner greed is probably a misnomer you are right. Most of these guys are multimillionaires. They are simply representing their organisations who don’t get a representative slice of the pie they bring in. The other big issue is the debt Covid has shoved onto these clubs. Football clubs are not big businesses. In the grand scheme they are medium sized enterprises you could say. Losing 70m a year due to Covid has forced owners hands somewhat. Without the ESL some of these clubs will have to borrow (more) or reign in the spending. That threatens their hegemony. No one likes to give up their dominance without a fight.
