I'd expect more of that for this season, as he's still young for a centre-back. Hopefully he is learning from these experiences, because when he becomes a player who plays the whole 90 minutes like he did the first 60, he will be one of the most solid defenders about.

On the subject of defence, had an interesting conversation down the pub. Do you think all our defenders are of similar ilk, I.e pretty ball playing defenders? The argument was whether, especially in a 3 or against certain teams, you need that bruiser who just focuses on getting head on the ball or throw their body on the line? For every Ferdinand you have a Vidic, for every Carvalho a Terry etc.. so for those Watford’s do we need a Dawson? Don’t think we actually got an answer last night :)

It's a fair question; however, i think Poch and his system needs our defenders to be good on the ball as they are part of the whole team play. I also think our defenders CAN be bruisers: ion fact i'd put Sanchez in that category actually of being both. However, the bigger issue is no real 'bruiser' in CM when it came to the crunch imo - hence we miss a fit and firing Wanyama to go alongside Dier or Dembele in such games

I think all our centre backs are capable of mixing it to be honest. Jan is one of the filthiest players in a very cunning way in the league. Don’t think any of the three are fancy dans.

Maybe, although I vaguely remember a stat that a third of all goals we concede are from set pieces, so not sure a big midfielder would help with that.

I also agree Jan is a dirty defender (or very clever if you prefer) but why is it that teams we struggle against are the ones who really bully is. Guess I have more faith in our defenders against a technical player then a Deeney

Tbf, we normally have the likes of Deeney, Lukaku etc in our pocket. Technical strikers usually are the better ones..
If there is a silver lining it's that it is easier to rectify getting done by the 'big lump' type of strikers than the technical ones...which makes the loss even more frustrating i know...

Didn’t cover himself in glory again yesterday, not sure if he’s suffering due to being rotated or his initial good form was due to being part of a better defensive unit. Don’t think he’s particularly confident on the ball either. Thoughts?

I think he will be a great player, but he had a mare last night.
Watford aren't an easy team to play against though and he never went hiding. Looked phased by their physicality.

Didn’t see much of last night but Sanchez has had a few nightmares for us. The Liverpool game at Anfield last season was particularly poor - down there with anything Ramon Vega or Stuart Nethercott ever produced.

But on his day, he’s exceptionally good. Young players will have that sort of inconsistency. The Watford league game showed both sides of Sanchez in one game. For 60 minutes he was excellent and then he made some bad decisions and never recovered.

The fact he’s shown he can be great suggests to me that he’s just missing experience and confidence which will come.

Did you see the lad at the world cup? He was bloody excellent. And he was for the most part for us last season as well. Obviously needs more experience and confidence, indeed. Excellent player, I think, and he's performed way beyond expectations so far, in my opinion.

He was fine until he switched to play on the left. He got caught out on the wrong foot a few times

    rusty! IMHO
    and he was not alone.
The first half we were all over the place.
Winks was doing a bad Pirlo impression and Wanyama! What was he doing?

Agree, overall he was excellent for Columbia in the WC but only after recovering from a poor start in their opening game 1-2 reverse against Japan:

'The Spurs man got caught out trying to get to a bouncing ball with Osako and he messed it up completely, leading to the follow-up shot which bought a red card (for Carlos Sanchez) and penalty. On the half hour mark he was beaten again by Osako after an underhit pass to him but the striker's shot flew wide. On the whole his play improved, but the 22-year-old still has a problem with hesitancy, letting high balls bounce and over-committing with his shoulder barging. 5

He is still only 22 and adapting to a much harder Lge and living in a different Country. Add to that young kids usually struggle after a break through season, i have no worries about him to be honest as he has ability and i am sure he will go on and show it sooner rather then later.

No doubt... but what worries me is that he is repeating the same mistakes, over and over again.

You could say that for yesterday's first goal and I am pretty sure he did likewise in games last season and in at least one PL game this year. He needs to learn from his mistakes if he is to fulfill his potential....

So are Hugo, Danny, Jan, Toby, Mousa, Eric, Christian, Harry and Mauricio.

At least at his age there is a chance he’ll grow out of it.

Sorry mate, that is an apologetic excuse in my book

No one is saying the list you mentioned are not making / have not made mistakes. But they are not the same identical mistakes. Danny, for example, played a horrible back-pass to Lukaku against Manure; he was hopelessly caught out of position last Saturday for Brighton's goal. Both howlers and in no way acceptable. But they are different types of mistakes.

The point about Davinson is that he is repeating the same mistake over and over. This type of behaviour is not related to age; it is the inability to learn from experience and it is a personality trait that distinguishes some people from others. Not to say he cannot get it out of his system but I suspect it will need much more effort than normal on his part to get there....

Hugo still can’t kick a ball properly.

Danny still doesn’t look before passing.

Jan still turns like a battleship.

Toby still lets faster players get too much of a run on him.

Mousa still doesn’t release the ball at the opportune time.

Eric still doesn’t play his passes with the correct line and pace.

Christian still wastes FK’s, hits the first man at corners, gets dispossessed cheaply and doesn’t play with the conviction of his ability.

Harry doesn’t pass when he should and does when he shouldn’t, he also doesn’t put his body first and plays when he should rest.

Mauricio is overly concerned with players “feelings” and is arrogant with his tactics when pragmatism would yield better results, he’s also still not learned that there are scientifically proven optimal times and metrics at which to use your substitutes.

All that said, I’m not going to give a kid a harm time for sometimes overestimating his strength against opponents who only turn up in one or two games a season. He’s 30 odd first class games into his career, if he’s still making mistakes 100 games in then we can write him off too.

    Fair?

Bit of a exaggeration there mate, of course he has made mistakes most players do especially those who are so young.

Did a good job v Huddersfield, good decision by Poch to put him in there and deal with their only threat (getting the ball into the box via set pieces, throws and generally lumping it in there).
