The only way the Chinese stopped it was by quarantining 800m and forcing them to stay inside.
What else can you do? You cant trace everyone five thousand people have encountered and make them self isolate.
You can't stick them all in a hospital.
Once you get past a few hundred in a small area it's the only thing you can do.

The data from Italy is a bit skewed because of the way that they are testing and it is very unreliable from China because of their secrecy. The best data that I have seen suggests that the number of people infected doubles every couple of days.
Quarantining a region only works if you have a cluster of infected people, so far that doesn't appear to be the case in the UK.

Enforcing a quarantine can only work effectively in a country like China where everyone knows if you break the quarantine you will be killed, far too many smart arses in the rest of the world who believe they can do what they like and fudge everyone else. I'm all for governments being truthful with the people but in this country our response seems far too wishy washy with nobody seeming to have a plan.
