Coronavirus

How can we shield the elderly and the high risk? You would also need to shield the shielders, the nurses, therapists, porters, cooks and cleaners too. Some people have really got no fudging idea!

Also, what do you do with all the people who live in the same house as people who are elderly or vulnerable? There will be millions who fall into that category. The idea just doesn’t stand up to any kind of analysis.

The idea of a country that can’t successfully organise a test and trace system - despite throwing £12 billion at it - shielding tens of millions of its citizens for months on end makes me chuckle.

Hopefully the Phase III trials of Oxford vaccine go swimmingly and it can be safely deployed by the new year.

I was talking to a mate who is involved in that on the periphery and he thought it unlikely that the Oxford vaccine would be the first out. He thought that the Pfizer and Chinese one would probably beat it. He thought that March was the most likely date for any of them and that there could be issues scaling up production of the Pfizer vaccine.

"Blaming others is a more comfortable psychological state than facing our own challenges."

Few on here would do well to read this.

Read this morning, was good. i dont know the science behind it all but fatigue quite clearly crept in, but not sure these localised 'tier' lockdowns are doing anything at least from what i can see in my 'High' tier 2 area.

One thing i did take note was the outdoor transferbility (is that spelt right??) of COVID. Being stuck indoors does no one any favours, and the limit on transfer of covid outside is meant to be fairly limited so we really need to make a case on outdoor social activity more.

For example, why have local councils not allowed restaurants to open up seating onto the pavements more? That'll boost the local area, local economy, and hopefully people's mental health too. Seems such an obvious opportunity.

Some local cafes still open, but with winter coming and COVID here, people more likely simply not to go out.

Some high streets can close the road through thoroughfare of traffic, thereby allowing pedestrians to walk safely on the road, and then use pavement space for restaurants/cafes to serve outdoors.

I know some areas have done this, just not sure why it's not more widely used.

. Ha, ha like this government could manage anything approaching that? Your response sounds very much like 'suck it and see.'

I doubt the government would be able to manage it they cant manage the response we are doing now though so its not really an excuse to say that it is against the realms of reality to work, if people that are capable were running the country.

The majority of those that need shielding live together in care homes so thats half your job done. You would just ask those working within the sector or in multi generational homes to also shield from the virus in order to service/protect that part of society. Then rather than paying those to stay home from work billions you direct that financial support to those areas. I dont see why people are so against the idea to be more targeted based on stats and supporting more of society than hurting everyone.

@Gilzeantoscore you have more and more Drs now daily and heads of charities warning of the issues of lockdowns and restrictions because they are the frontline of the fall out they cause. The risks increase for an increase in child poverty, unemployment, ill health physically and mentally, domestic and child abuse, surely as a socialist increases in those areas as a result and additional lose of life is a concern and not a trade off?

It really interesting that a frontline high profile GP within Tower Hamlets one of the most affected areas based on spread of the virus...

The Government must consider whether another Covid-19 lockdown would cause more harm than good to the population’s ‘health and wellbeing’, according to a group of nearly 70 GPs led by high-profile names.

‘Restrictions and lockdown have recognised value in pandemic control and we fully supported the first lockdown when little was known about the virus.

‘The position now is transformationally different: after the short, initial lockdown phase, the harms to long term health and wellbeing begin to outweigh the benefits.

GPs are concerned that a ‘one-track’ response to rising cases ‘threatens more lives and livelihoods than Covid-lives saved’,

They were able to give companies furloughing their staff billions of pound within a very short space of time so the idea that we could not direct financial support to those most in need is a bias view.

There is one point I think many including myself have missed. What do you do say next year when people are pushing for a lockdown to restrict rising case numbers and there is simply no money left in order to support those that lose out as a result? Manchester are being told there is no additional support now available which is going to gut them, will an alternative way of thinking only be viable when all other options have been used?

Quite a few local MPs/Mayors are coming out saying hospitals are not overwhelmed - and certainly not from covid.

what’s going on?

Labour council leaders in Oldham and somewhere else are calling it a lie, Burnham who is Labour, socialist is saying the same and asking for no lockdown. Maybe its not party political, maybe people who care about wider society are now seeing it for what it is and supporting all.

Where are you reading this? Most reports I see say hospitals are at risk of being overwhemled.. Who do you believe?

There is no reading, there were three council leaders on tele in the last few ours saying the same thing

Sean Fielding who is a huge socialist politician is saying he feel bullied by the government into things because they are being told they have two choices and they wont listen to reason including that the bed situation is not as bad as being made out.
