Coronavirus

Its not just the FT. Excess deaths is how every public body and every academic who studies pandemics, flu, etc gets national data on the effects of the virus. Do you have a better way to record deaths caused by Coronavirus?

Can you not see the flaw in saying every excess death is down to covid?

I am sure you are right, they do - doesn’t mean it’s accurate - as shown

Shouldn't worry about countries reported deaths. The only measure worth looking at is excess deaths. Then if you wanted to, you could compare nations. But what is the point?
And excess deaths only has value as a measure a few months/years after this is all over. If the excess deaths are 0 after this then we can count them as COVID deaths. If the number becomes negative (as many suspect it will) then they need to be taken from the COVID number.

It is simple, it is the least bad (aka best) way to measure the impact. You didn't give a better option. Can you now outline a more accurate way to measure the virus' impact?

While we won't have definitive comprehensive data until after there is still "value as a measure" in looking at excess deaths now. It is still by far the clearest and most consistent measurement. Unless you have a better metric.

Actual cause of death would be a good place to start.

the stats are woeful - means no one can ever recover/every excess death is covid.

but we have made a complete mess of the situation that we are trying to back up the actions taken.

Exactly.

"We've got 65,000 more deaths this year than we have over the last 5 year average during a global pandemic. But not sure what is causing it."

Yes it's an assumption, but most bodies of work are assumptions and then proved out.

It could be a measure of COVID-related deaths, it could also be a measure of how close to death a chunk of our population was.

Walk along any provincial high street and look at all the fat clams this country is swarming with. Hardly surprising that a number of them kick the bucket as soon as they get hit by a virus.

It’s still an excess death. I get what you’re saying they might have died from one thing or another in the coming year or two. But the virus has hastened their demise, so it makes sense it’s counted nevertheless.

Any other metric relies on interpretation. If they were comorbid (had COVID and another condition) which do you choose as cause of death? If someone dies of pneumonia but weren’t tested for COVID - we won’t know what caused the pneumonia. So excess deaths is a consistent and clear measure. You can replicate it across nations that use different systems for death certificates, and it’s relatively trustworthy.

There was a great video exposing the biggest killer through the years which they dub the silent killer which is high blood pressure.

People adding salt on salt in their diets killing themselves in 10s of thousands a year.

Apparently the UKs biggest killer too when you consider it’s a major contributor to heart disease which is the worlds largest killer.

High blood pressure doubles the mortality rate of Covid-19, that’s your face mask moment there. Live a healthier life and your chances of living longer increases dramatically even with Covid-19. The Masks are for many the wrong thing we are looking at. If people want to live longer and be able to fight Covid-19 esq issues they need to look after themselves better.

The unpopular thing to hear is that red meat specifically and meat consumption in general causes high blood pressure and heart disease. We are told sugar and other products are the big killers. Switching to a plant-based diet is the healthiest and most effective change an individual can make for themselves and the planet.

I agree

As much as the government has fudged up and let’s be clear they have, as much as this exposes their lack of preparation it also exposes joe public’s lack of self preparation aka their own well-being healthwise.

I'm fairly sure that moderate (red) meat consumption doesn't lead to high blood pressure.

What it does lead to is tasty food. I've eaten pet food cooked by the man who is widely regarded as the best chef in the world and it doesn't touch a bacon sandwich from a greasy spoon. The proper food he cooks though - that's another level entirely.

Sweeping generalisation.
