What a great topic and discussion - if only there was a podcast we could discuss this sort of thing on @milo!
For me, like an earlier post, I supported Spurs because my Dad did (at the time) and growing up in Hertfordshire in the late 80's you were either Spurs or Arsenal (or Liverpool if a glory hunter).
As an 8 year old I had no idea whether we were historically successful, played with a progressive and attractive style, invested in youth, adopted culturally and environmentally friendly practices?!
I am therefore retrospectively stating some of the things that I am proud of and that resonate with me.
1. Being the challenger club appeals to me - living in the perpetual ho.pe that good times are just on the horizon and that we have a journey to embrace. If I was to pick an NHL or Bundesliga team for example this would be really key to me - I would never choose the perennial winner - that would just be boring nor would I want the relegation/wooden spoon fodder.
2. Having an identity of style over substance; skillful and flair players - i was brought up on Gazza, Waddle, Ginola, Klinsmann, Sheringham.
3. IN-GER-LAND - not many will share this but as a 9 year old in 1990 and seeing the adulation that the country gave to Gazza and Lineker having our players playing prominent roles in the national team has always been a source of (probably outdated) pride. Sheringham and Anderton at Euro 96, Kane and Dele in 2018.
4. As an adult I have an appreciation for the way that we are financially responsible (even though the latest figure shows our debt to be nearly £1bn - though this is still 'manageable debt') - I really didnt understand it at the time but the way the club conducted business in the late Scholar era was shameful.
