As someone who's never seen the kid play (or at least has forgotten if I have), can someone please tell me why King keeps getting mentioned alongside him?

Is it because of playing style or just because he's a good defender from our academy?

There's always going to be similarities between CBs as their skillsets don't vary to the degree of players in other positions, although obviously Michael Dawson is very different to Jan Vertonghen for example. Ledley didn't have many weaknesses and I don't think CCV does either, obviously he's 17 so still has a ton of developing/improving to do but there aren't any holes in his game that you can pinpoint and say he really needs to work on. Like I said earlier some will see his height as a problem as he's only around 5'11" or so but he's built like a rock, has a good leap(probably due to being the son of a former NBA player) and also has an aggressive side too. He's right footed but mostly always plays the LCB role, he defends first and foremost but is also very comfortable playing out from the back, rarely will he look to just lump it. He has decent pace but I've never really seen him have to use it as he positions himself well. I'd attribute a lot of those qualities to Ledley so I can see why some make the comparison but it's best for CCV if he can just concentrate on doing what he does well rather than having to live up to such comparisons.

- Honestly he's probably ahead of King or any defender I've seen at that age
- Strong, physically imposing
- Seems to lack some of the errors (judgement) that seem to plague younger defenders

Like others, I suspect its his "comfort" in his role that leads to the King comparison.

Very promising player for us, if he continues, I'd expect him to be in squad or on a significant loan by next season.

Thanks Yoof. Let's hope he continues to improve and becomes the player we hope him to be! It's about time we produced another decent central defender! My ability to predict is patchy at best. I thought King, Thelwell and Gardner would be our defence pretty much sorted for years!!

Thanks Raz. I think I am going to have to get myself down to watch some U21 games. It seems like we have a really great group.

CCV sounds a bit like Micah Richards, is that fair?

Only in terms of their build. Richards is a fundamentally thick player, something I doubt will ever change. CCV's awareness, reading of the game and tactical understanding are all far superior despite his age, he knows what he's doing and what a defender's job is. Richards is quicker, though CCV isn't slow either.

Can't remember which game it was but I watched Richards again recently and he was all over the place, really poor.

Agree, physical and offers an attacking threat is about the only ways CCV & Richards are similar.

As per the earlier comments, CCV gets compared to King because of the intelligence, positioning, etc, something Richards would not be accused of

I always understood that the issue with Richards was that he got all Billy big gonad*s as soon as he got in the first team at City. Flash cars and slacked off in training.

Think he spent too much time in the gym putting on unnecessary muscle.

Maybe the case, but comes across like he has matured very much and i respect that

I heard Richards on the radio just after he moved to Fiorentina and found him refreshingly articulate and reflective. He talked about his problem with being neither a specialist CB or a RB, about realising he wasn't good enough as soon as he saw Zabaleta in training, and how his pace had covered for his lack of natural defensive ability.

Tbf Richards at CCV age was playing and scoring for Villa and winning MOTM performances. I would happily bet that CCV wouldn't be right now having seen him for Under 21s. Richards is by a very good player who has been hampered by injury. The main difference between youth football and first team football is physicality and ability in the air - I think it would be great to get him a League 2 loan for the second half of the year and see how he faces up to competitive adult football where centre halves will be tested.

Someone definitely rates him:

http://www.squawka.com/news/maurici...rs-is-a-better-centre-back-than-i-was/777556?

Pochettino told his pre-match press conference on Tuesday: “I already told you that, for me, he can be one of the best centre-backs in England in the future. He has a strong mentality, quality, all the qualities for playing centre-back.

“Does he remind me of myself? No, he is better than me! I said one of the best centre-backs in England.”

The only problem I see him having at this stage of his career is that he will never had played at this level and will find players think and play quicker than he is use to, he has all the attributes to be a good player, it's now down to his mentality. I personally would only play him with an experienced partner like Toby. It's difficult for young players if they get their chances in weaker sides, I'm aware of the need to rotate and give players game time but too many changes can be counter productive.

Well I would suggest it is a problem that all young players face when they make the switch to the "big leagues".

I would play him with Wimmer if fit as Toby and Verts will be playing against Boro, CSKA and Emirates Marketing Project, 3 very important matches in 8 days

Wimmer is 4-5 years older than 2CV and an international. That should be ok. It's hardly like chucking Campbell in next to Nethercott.

Actually the hustle and bustle of a League One side might be a less comfortable step for him than a more cultured lesser EPL or lesser european side.
