Ben Davies

We should have played Vertonghen left side, at least he is left footed. Anyone but Trippier, that guy was stone cold AWFUL as a left wing back.

Yep it didn't work, coaches try things, and I'm sure Poch has seen that it stifled our left side and has taken the lesson on board.

If not he is dead to me.
kidding

Trippier was excellent in the 3-0 dismantling of Everton last week and having been rested against Dortmund, Poch would have expected him to be fresher than Aurier, a defender who may still have been recovering from his Spurs debut midweek.

At his best Trippier can be exactly the WB we need, especially against teams that keep ten men behind the ball. His great strength - when in form - is his ability to undo defences with first time through-balls and pinpoint crosses.

Problem is in order to achieve that he needs to be in top form. Yesterday was one of those days when he, like several others, was well short of his best. I'm just not sure how Poch is supposed to know which games he, Eriksen, Dele or anyone else is going to excel in before the first whistle blows.

Has Trippier ever played LB/LWB for us or Burnley before?

And if Davies was carrying a knock, why wasn't Walker-Peters given his spot on the bench; considering he looked promising against Saudi Sportswashing Machine at the start of the season and I gather that he has played at LB for our youth team.

If Davies had 'picked up a knock' he shouldn't have been on the bench.

He was 'warming up' for a good thirty minutes during the second half up till 85th minute,up and down the line, strange if he wasn't 100% fit.

All of which points to Poch using his 'knock' as a smokescreen in order to try Son at LWB, or rather LWF. Which made perfect sense in the context of the game because what we needed most was someone capable of opening up packed defences and offering more of a scoring threat.

There are two narratives with us this season which need to be caught up on. The first is that's Sissoko is garbage, and happily most now see his improvement although it took a while for the prevailing wisdom to seep through.

But the second is that Davies is the back up, and just keeping the spot warm for Danny Rose, who supposedly just walks back into the side. Not even withstanding the interview with The Sun, or that a player who may well be out for almost a year is going to be nowhere near the condition to play to a high level in a side that demands peak fitness...forgetting those two things, Davies has been immense. He has stepped up, and he deserves people thinking of him as the first choice. He's earned it. He's different to Rose, but he's productive, he's confident, he absolutely deserves the respect of being seen as one of the first names on the team sheet, and not even the 'best back up LB in the league'. He's way beyond that, but even now some Spurs fans are assuming Rose comes straight back in. It's just not likely to happen. Davies has been too good.

Think @Spur of the moment might have a third narrative to add.

In recent games, Davies has added an extra threat to his game, getting forwards with crosses and shots, this is the big thing his game was missing. He used to pause and come back, with a strong defensive instinct, but now he gets forwards more comfortably, more productively.

Notching goals and running the left hand side, safe that Dier and the 3 at the back have him covered.

I still prefer Rose if both are super fit, but Davies has improved nicely and grown in confidence. It will be interesting to see him against some more 'top' sides

Hard to argue that he's number 1 now, if he maintains this level when we play the big games then it will be unquestionable
