AVB's one upfront system doomed for failure at WHL

Come back from the Lane and sick of AVB's stubbornness not to be more flexible with his system of one upfront at home.

We were 1 nil down and he took Defoe off and brought on Ade. Brought boos from the crowd and nobody could frankly understand the decision.

I think the 1 upfront can work away from home as we have pacey players on the break but not at the Lane.. We're just not treating enough for me and Defoe needs support, he's getting scraps to feed off at the moment. With too up aswell the wingers would more to aim at.

When we play at the Lane we need to play Defoe and Ade upfront full stop. Dempsey does very little and those 2 upfront would work so much better.. Sort it out Andre!
 
there are many problems, and the insistence with one up top at home is just one of them

Ade starts up front the AM will be bought into the game far more.



Redknapp used exactly the same formation with Crouch and VDV, so it's obviously not the system that's broke, it's the personnel.

but we sold 2 big influences in VDV and Modric who helped that formation work. With the players we have now, we have to do something different. We have been shocking at home all season, not just today. Its not working, we look toothless up front and teams come to the Lane thinking they can nick a point or even win.

to take Defoe off today and bring on Ade did not work. We didnt score, we didnt test the keeper, all we did was look all over the place chasing an equaliser.

AVB has got it into his head that Ade and Defoe cannot work and this stubborness will simply pile the pressure on. All his fault
 
Defoe has not got the intelligence, strength or physical presence to play up front on his own, if we had Corluka and VDV our problems would be solved, in seriousness we do have a lot of injuries at present and Dempsey and Siggy are not living up to expectations.

yes it was 4-4-2, with Thudd and Palacios in midfield, Lennon and Krunchie out wide..... no 1 up front, we simply played what we had and to our strengths.

what does Fergie do when he is chasing a game, he throws as many strikers on as he has got. But wise old man AVB needs to stick with his precious 1 up top formation

He has played both of them on a number of occasions.
What he did today was drag Defoe off after offering nothing and give Dempsey a chance to playing behind a real target man.
I don't believe VDV would be that much better than Dempsey or Sigurdsson behind Defoe.
 
Nothing to do with one up front. We could not get the ball into their half enough. Our midfield created. no chances. We had a creative frre zone in midfield
They seemed incapable of doing anything other than a simple square pass or a pass back to

Adebayor was not very good when he came on, but Dempsey did nothing all game, but more importantly was very unlikely to create anything. So it was the wrong descion to keep him on and take Defoe off.

Not about formations its about the players. We brought Carroll on, that says we do not have the players and enough options.

We could not afford to take off our most potent goal threat.

Dempsey offered nothing either

what we needed was an extra striker in the box, someone else for the likes of Lennon and Bale to aim for. We needed to simplify our tactics, we were a goal behind and chasing the game.

a couple of Chelsea fans told me that AVB was always trying to be too clever. It annoyed the fans and eventually he lost the dressing room.
 
You'd swear AVB was subbing Adebayor off for Defoe every week or something with the way people are going on.
Ade has been in the match day squad for just 6 games this season.
He was subbed on 5 times and unused once.
From that 5 he's been subbed on Defoe twice and once each for Van der Vaart, Sigurdsson and Dempsey.

AVB even put on Kane at one point to play 442 with Defoe ffs.

What can't speak can't lie. Maybe Martinez noticed that, too. Was AVB aware of that?
Systems work but managers have to be flexible.

Nothing wrong with Ade coming on, should have started or come on sooner. The problem was taking off Defoe.

Thats a matter of opinion. Who knows what would have happened if we went 442. Would we have completely lost the midfield?
Normally sticking 2 up gives the opposition defenders twice as much to deal with. But Wigan has 3 central defenders playing today. Would 2 up really have unsettled them the way everyone suggests?

well what AVB did had no effect whatsoever apart from a bit more huff and puff

Keeping Defoe on alongside Ade wouldnt have been that much worse
