Hip hop help

Hi all

I've always liked hip hop, at least I think I have, but I only listen to the modern 'pap' I'm fed (Kanye, Dizzee etc), and so am pretty clueless.

I was told Nas' Illmatic album is excellent and a 'must have', but to be honest, I didn't like it...apart from Halftime and Represent, which I love:

Can anyone recommend anything like these two? I guess..kind of upbeat, but not too commercial.

Cheers

Basically, you're looking for anything with an early-90s era production style, and some sort of substance to the lyrics, right?

That sort of stuff?

Basically, I'd go through production credits.. most stuff produced by DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Havoc, Alchemist etc won't really steer you wrong

Agree with PLJ's recommendation of ATCQ

EDIT: This stupid thing only lets me put 3 videos in my post - will add more later

Don't think the Hip Hop thread made it across from the old forum, so will just use this thread. Has anyone heard of Harry Shotta? Does a Rap Roundup every week on Semtex's show on 1xtra - have a listen to these:

Nototious BIG - Life after Death

Those are 3 Albums that i'd highly recommend.

One that Diego posted on the last thread

Have been meaning to find more of his stuff but it's fudging expensive and hard to find.

Listened to Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde for the first time last week - amazing album

The first two albums that they put out were great but after that the group just fell apart.

I'm a huge fan of any of the early to mid 90's southern Cali stuff. A ton of great artists came out around that time.....Pharcyde, Tha Alkaholiks, Souls of Mischief, Casual, & Del to name a few. Speaking of....

Del tha Funky Homosapien - No need for alarm

Great album, front to back

Can't find the original Pugs Atomz version of this with lyrics, but this is decent:

And one of my favourite tunes of all time. Dan The Automator with Kool Keith...

I'll admit that Dre and Snoop and Outkast aside, my hip hop tastes have been heavily East Coast/NYC oriented, and even then, its mostly stuff from Illmatic onwards.

Someone recommended that Pharcyde to me, and I really enjoyed it. Will definitely check out that Del tha Funky Homosapien album

Was listening to this earlier:

Really awesome track

Wow, there's just so much good hip-hop out there, almost too much to recommend, but since I'm not doing anything special in my hotel room I'll just give you a long ass list with some good albums.

In no specific order:

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Essential album imo.
Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 2 - People say his lyrics are too much, I think he has a lot of good stuff.
Jedi Mind Tricks - Visions Of Gandhi
MF Doom - MM..Food
MF Doom - Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs - This is just instrumentals, but I like that also.
Gang Starr - Hard To Earn
The Psycho Realm - The Psycho Realm
Brother Ali - Shadows On The Sun
Swollen Members - Bad Dreams
Atmosphere - You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain... Why Kneel - This is a strange album, but so fudging good. Just some great MC's making an album.
Rakim - The 18th Letter
Pete Rock - Hip Hop Underground Soul Classics
Scientifik - Criminal
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
KRS-One - KRS-One
