Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

I like Gareth Bale as a player, but his initial speed over the first few yards is very vey very very very suspect, and i think that a fast right winger eg Cristiano Ronaldo, Aaron Lennon, Shaun Wright Philips, as a football player would/will consistantly skin him alive...

hahahahaha.

Re: Gareth Bale

So he's just scored a screamer of a free-kick for Wales...

...why do we have so many free-kick takers on our books that never score directly for us?!

I think it is because scoring from a direct free kick is quite rare and players that do it regularly even rarer. Unrealistic expectations, in other words.

My take is: we never give anyone "sighters". It's one chance and if you miss someone else takes the next one. Just look at the number of games where Beckham would miss the first 2 freekicks he got then nails the third. We should decide on out best freekick taker and give him every one.

Re: Gareth Bale

Our record with them is still shockingly bad. Bale scored against Arsenal in September 2007, the next direct free-kick we scored in any competition without a deflection was Kyle Walker's against Blackburn in April 2012. That's the best part of five seasons. 265 games in all competitions.

I don't expect any player to score every free-kick they get or even the majority of the free-kicks they get, but there are plenty of players out there who you expect to at least go close with a free-kick when you win one. With us I usually cheer when the ref blows his whistle and then remember that we're Tottenham and don't expect the slightest thing from it. The last genuinely good free-kick taker we had was Ziege who left us in 2004. Everyone remembers the wonder goal against Arsenal, not many remember he scored one the week before against West Brom too. He also scored an excellent one in the FA Cup against Emirates Marketing Project and then hit the post with another in the same game. There's probably a few more examples too. That's what we need, someone who you actually think might do something with a free-kick that we get.

Scored an amazing one against Emirates Marketing Project too.

Re: Gareth Bale

Strange thing is Bale made his name at Southampton as a bit of a free kick specialist. Not sure what has now changed, maybe we should just say Gareth, your hitting ever single direct free kick that is scorable and let him find his feet again or something??

What about the two free kicks Bentley scored for us in between 2007 and Walker's?

Re: Gareth Bale

what are you guys on.
bale is a step away from world class.
no other player in our set up comes close at the moment.
hopefully avb can shape the team to bring him up to the next level.

here's his thumping freekick.

Class!

He should be taking the majority of our free kicks. We have some good free kick takers though in Dempsey and Sigurdsson now too. Although I'd have Sig and Bale taking over Dempsey.

Re: Gareth Bale

I thought Bale was pretty awful yesterday, yes he scored, he totally fluffed it up, kept cutting inside and getting in the way of our CMs

Defensively he didnt help out Naughton as much as he shouldve too, come GB we all know your a lot lot better than youve played so far

to be fair, i thought bale saved naughton's blushes on a number of occasions yesterday.. whether it was getting back to foil gunter or mccleary, he made some vital saving tackles.

helping out defensively is something he did better than attacking yesterday, imo.

Re: Gareth Bale

i think bales role yesterday was to "run around a bit" down his flank and across the oppositions defence. he was the decoy for the most part.

I thought he did more defensively than in some matches last season. Still nowhere near Lennon's contribution defensively though.

I don't really see him getting back to foil their full back as massive praise. That's what he's supposed to do, even more so when we have a young full back in his first PL start for us.

Bale still has a lot to learn off the ball in my opinion, but I think he's improving.

Re: Gareth Bale

He made some really good runs yesterday that drew the defence to him and left space in the middle and on the right but that sort of thing is rarely picked up or highlighted in the analysis
