Tottenham Hotspur have moved to strengthen their backroom operation before the new season by appointing Gretar Steinsson to a new role as performance director, The Athletic has learned.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender was head of recruitment and development at Everton until his exit in December after three years in the position.

Steinsson is expected to have a wide remit across senior and youth levels at the north London club and work closely with managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

The 40-year-old was second in command to Everton’s then director of football Marcel Brands by the time he left, having joined them in 2018 as chief European scout. That followed almost four years as technical director at Fleetwood Town.

Ex-Iceland international Steinsson has a strong reputation in the game and will bolster the Spurs set-up following Steve Hitchen’s departure from the job of technical performance director.

They are also believed to be close to appointing former Emirates Marketing Project and Anderlecht coach Simon Davies to a senior post in their academy.

The former Manchester United midfielder, 48, is well regarded having held a number of prominent titles in City’s youth system before moving to Belgium in 2019 alongside Vincent Kompany.

At Tottenham it is understood the will become head of methodology and that would see the Welshman support academy manager Dean Rastrick and head of coaching Chris Powell.

We had a Simon Davies didn't we? Same time we signed Etherington.

We did indeed, signed from Peterborough with Etherington as you say (a couple of Pleaty recommendations). This is a different Simon Davies though, he was part of the Man Utd 'class of 92' youth team that had Beckham, Giggs, Butt, Gary Neville, Scholes, Robbie Savage and Keith Gillespie

Decent player Davies was but seemed to be injured a lot. Didn't he score a great goal in the 5-1 v Chelsea under Hoddle?

As decent as he was, there was a collective cringe when he was brought onto the pitch as one of our "club legends" on the last day at WHL.
