Putin & Russia

They have around 50 Mig-29's, quite why they haven't had them up flying CAP is beyond me. Bit like why Russia hasn't made more use of theirs either.
Unless both sides lost so many in the starting phases of this and it just hasn't been reported, least not that I have seen.
Not sure but I did read somewhere that about 100 Russian planes have been shot down.

but the fact remains that the Ukrainians don’t want to be part of Russia, they are fighting against that now with all they have.

The Russian empire in its various forms has been both larger and smaller than it is now, encompassing many more sovereign nations at some points but also retracting substantial at other points.

if their whole claim to Ukraine is based on the fact that Ukrainians are Slavs that speak a similar language to them and have been part of previous Russian empires.

based on that logic the uk should have claims over the US Canada Australia New zealand and pretty much half the world.

There is also the fact that there are huge swathes of the Russian empire where there is very few ethnic Russians or even Slavs, so if they base there ‘moral’ claim on Ukraine on there being Slavs and closely related to Russians linguistically socially historically, ethnically and we have to respect that ‘moral’ claim what do they base their claim for sovereignty of places like Dagestan? Or almost the entirety of Siberia? They can’t have it both ways.

but to your other points, yeah we are supporting a war in Yeman because it makes financial sense to… that’s fudging disgusting… Saudi is a cuñt of a state that we shamelessly prop up

Good post. Moves on from my point which isn’t that interesting anyway (I don’t think Russia does have 'a claim’ over Ukraine. My point was Russia's links and history with Poland and the other nations you mentioned are completely different to Ukraine, and for these historic reasons, Russia invading Poland etc isn’t on the cards).

The flying range of a MiG-29 jet - of which Ukraine purportedly has several dozen - can be extended to about 2,100 kms. Plenty to get there and back for this mission.

If they could discretely get a small squadron of them down south of Odessa, near the Moldovan border, they could load up a couple with bombs up to 3,000 lbs. Prepare others to fly escort and wing out low over the western Black Sea.

Prior to that, have a major distraction arranged for Russian air defence further north in the Donbas region. As that kicks off, send the Damn Bastard Busters eastward, flying low and fast across the sea. Destination? Praskoveevka, just over 130km northwest of Sochi, about 7-800 km east. Their mission? Bomb the brick out of Putin's personal palace and bug out.

Hello, Maxar? Got a smokin' photo op for your satellite cams. Smokin' and smoulderin'. The psychological value would be off the charts. And Zelensky's next set of stand-up comedy routines would bring the house down. Preferably the Russian Duma.

I'm here all week. Try the back bacon. And note the photo credit bottom right.

We're sending a big load of extra troops to Romania this week apparently (from a mate who is currently deployed in Estonia)

I heard male Romanian’s “of age” are being asked to return to Romania to help defend the country and that they are properly preparing for war there now. Not sure if they have intel or just contingency, I’d imagine contingency?

I think the worry is the Russian's will use Transnistria (the Russia breakaway bit of Moldovia) to either open another front on Ukraine or have a go at Moldovia; more than they will threaten Romania per se.

i have to agree with this. And agree with what you and @SpurMeUp say about the Saudis as well. As well as what the Chinese are doing to Uyghurs
Along with what the US do to X.
Along with what the UK does to Y.
Etc etc etc

Applying self righteous values to other sovereign nations is a dangerous game that is impossible to win and weakens foreign policy, no matter how abhorrent we find others actions.
It's why groups like NATO exist.
It's sucks, but most governments are hideous.

but there should be and we should have a moral compass. Otherwise might will always be right whether that military or financial.

and if that’s the case you can’t argue against what Putina doing in Ukraine either.
