Matt Doherty

Fantastic performance. He did the lot, great passing, great tackling. Yes, it was against the worst team that I’ve seen us play this season but still he came out of the match tonight with top marks. He definitely seems the player that we thought we were signing not the player we’ve had lurking around for a year. Well done to him for the continued application, desire and coming back to show that he still has it. Our first choice for that position now. Those passes over the top to Kane… wow.

Absolutely fantastic. Quite a change from his performances as a RB. Sometimes you have to wonder what the club is doing. Signing Doherty to play as a RB in a flat back 4 where he was bloody awful.

Forming a good partnership with Kulusevski, that's really good to see. Even though Kulusevski likes to cut inside he does stay wide quite a bit. Both allowing Doherty to mix it up between under- and overlapping runs, also giving him a player to combine with wide.

Still a way to go down that side in terms of creating goals against well organised teams (like with the rest of the team), but definitely steps in the right direction.

Been showing that application and desire for quite a while now. Even when he looked likely to leave in January he was a true professional when on the pitch.

Great to see him get these performances from that. Well deserved. Should be a role model for anyone not currently in the team.

Interesting that he has a higher assist per 90 number than TAA, who is posting freakish numbers himself

Oh that’s glorious. Thank you. My Dipper supporting mates don’t shut up about Trent and Doherty has always been a figure of fun. That one’s just gone on the text now.

Was outstanding last night. I’m no fan but he was excellent going forwards and defending.

Considering the lack of game time in his best posistion it was harsh to hear some of the comments he was getting, however i really thought he was one of our best players last night and hope he keeps it up.

The second part - yes, he was excellent last night, and similarly at Leeds

The first part - not at all. He's been awful until recently. Even though a lot of those awful performances were as a RB, I'd expect a RWB with his level of experience to put in passable performacnes as a RB

Hope he keeps it up and continues his renaissance for the rest of the season!

I agree with every word of that.

Some players are adaptable, whether it's thanks to experience, footballing intelligence, great basic skills, or just sheer cussedness.

Some players are not.

While I'd rather have a flexible RB/RWB able to perform whichever role the manager asks of him, including changing it up mid-game, I'm happy that Doherty seems to be finding his mojo again. We've got Royal for when we need to park the bus -- the least flair-y Brazilian since Dunga?

I admire players like Doherty who know what they can do and also their limits. No complaints if on the bench but ready to do the job. Of course provided that we can find a use for them and move on quickly if not needed.

If we can get a few specialists like him it might be a cheaper way to put together a squad for depth. Depends on the manager also, not sure if Conte prefers right squadsm
