The have been rumours for quite sometime that a number of tories are in bed with China. Put in is probably laughing his arse off about that.
On the one hand it is good it is coming to light a bit like the expenses scandal. Anyone standing for a position of public office should have their accounts checked annually by HMRC and then they could start on the reform of the house of Lords.
I agree. But if we want good MPs who don't need to take a second income, we need to significantly increase what we pay them.
Which won't cost that much in the scheme of things. Especially if we cut how many of them there are. Getting them to vote for that is the killer though.

always a fan of "we need MPs with real world experience" as often a Tory MP quips. As if these second jobs are stacking shelves in Tesco or changing an adult nappy in social care. Do me a favour.
We do need mps with real world experience. We have far too many lawyers and career mps who's only skills are to bs. We need more doctors, engineers, scientists, military etc... but their focus should be on representing their constituents and the british public. Making this country be the best it can be.

In the old days, Tories used to serve the interests of their masters and wait to leave parliament and then get their 'rewards.' Nowadays they have the nose in the trough whilst still MPS.

majority of our government are privately educated. the majority of the country isn't. the life they've had growing up to the rest of the country is stark.
Still as long as people will shovel the brick the Tories tell them, won't ever change.
You want our MPs to be educated to a lower standard?

My son goes private and my second will do when older, i'm not against private schools (well, actually principally i am, champagne socialist i guess). Just because someone goes to a private school does not necessitate they will be smarter than all kids in a state school.
But that's besides the point. My point is, and i see this first hand, the kids who go to a private school do not grow up how i did in a state school. So to be told it's "real life experience" that MPs have, well, it's flimflam frankly.
Now, on to current issues such as Owen Paterson (and his "real world" experience). we have Tories saying "well they can always be voted out if the population doesn't want them in". But thanks to our archaic political system, you cant really. Look at Dominic Grieve, who lost his seat once losing the Tory Whip to a literal nobody, because she was a Conservative. And even if you can vote them out, Boris just brings them in to the house of Lords. Hi Zac Goldsmith.
Speaking of the House of Lords, 92 Hereditary Peers sit in the House of Lords. When Daddy kicks it, their children inherit the title. What. A. Democracy.

Should replace the HoL with the old Irish upper chamber system - people elected from within their professions in proportion to their prevelance in society. 2 doctors, 4 nurses, 3 lawyers, 10 amazon delivery drivers etc., with elections overseen by their own professional associations
The essential thing with a new HoL is that it can't be directly elected. It can still be elected, but not in a way that makes it equal to the HoC. It needs to have no ex-politicians either
