5 subs rule

I saw that and agree it is an interesting challenge to the standard response, everyone automatically saying it favours the big clubs.

I think it can be go either way, depending on how managers use it. In a long season, fatigue and recovery between games becomes a factor. Judicious substituting of star players can help recovery. It's much easier to recover and play twice a week if you only play 60 or 75 minutes and it will help reduce injuries. This can certainly be a boon for the bigger clubs, but it will depend on the drop-off in quality as the article says. A club that relies on graft and teamwork over individual talent can also use the extra subs to keep the intensity high, so it could favour teamwork over star-power.

I dont see it as a good thing, in Rugby Union internationals the use of so many substitutes usually sees the teamwork fall apart, I realise rugby is far more reliant on set pieces but I can see it leading to chaotic closing stages to games.

I don't buy his arguments. The bigger teams use fewer subs because they're already - in most cases - winning. In the rare instances they're not, the five subs rule means they have more, better quality players available to turn it around.

15 minutes left, and City are drawing against Norwich. Both teams have two subs left. City throw Aguero and Mahrez into the superstar mix to win it, while Norwich have the likes of Adam Idah, Mario Varancic and Josh Martin to rely on.

Whose advantage is that?

Do not care either way to be honest, they do need to drop the drinks breaks though.

Apparently they plan to keep those, and are also considering the introduction of specialist kickers for free kicks and penalties who can be brought on for set plays.

The goal is also to be renamed ‘the end zone.’

Man U might need a roll on roll off PK taker then...

A countdown timer at the end of each quarter with a buzzer has been suggested too.

I’ve never understood why they were necessary. They are professional sportsmen. They ought to be able to run around for 45 minutes without looking like Mark from Peep Show when he takes up jogging!

It's because the season was running into the summer. We've had them in international tournaments for a while.

And? I know many fellow runners that would happily run a 10k without the need to have a drinks break. There are people that can run a half marathon without needing to take a drinks break. I honestly don’t think you need a drinks break within a period of 45-50 minutes.

I don't know, I do get thirsty watching from the stands. They should make it 15 minutes and open up the bars.

I was giving the likely reason rather than expressing a personal view, although I don't really care one way or the other on drinks breaks. I think that they have been beneficial to us and we've certainly seen Mourinho use them to change things or repeat instructions.

I think the Brentford manager was taking the tinkle when he brought on his tactical white board onto the pitch against Swansea last week during their drinks break.....bring on 11 chairs on at the same time why don't you.....

Please do not let them turn into the farce that is American gridiron ( a 60 minute game that lasts for 3 hours).:(
