Football and TV

I'm sure the Greed League would be happy to have an eight team league, with each team playing each other 3 times and a play off for the championship, it would guarantee them 4 big games each round. It would also allow for rest time between European games. The rest of the clubs can go and fudge off as there's no relegation, trebles all round chaps!

I know you are not being entirely serious but the greed league would die quickly. No neutral would watch it and soon even fans of those teams in it would get cheesed off.

I’m not so sure, I think there is a market it for it, there are sports where it’s the same contenders every year, it would primarily cater to a different type of fan certainly but they are out there.
 
I don't believe many fans bother watching teams they don't follow, the tv fan who's never been to a game will watch anything and oversea sales are based on the Sky 4, don't think there are many takers for Stoke City or WBA in the worldwide audience and that's where the money is, got to remember the mugs who pay to go to matches don't really count, only there to create atmosphere, if they could come up with cgi they wouldn't need us to go.

210 Premier League games could be shown live on TV from 2019

Far more than half of all Premier League matches could be shown live on British television from 2019 under the new domestic broadcasting deal.

Premier League chairmen will meet next week to decide how many matches should be offered in the new tender, with three options outlined: 190 matches, 200 or a maximum 210 of the 380 top-flight games played each season.

Under the existing deal, 168 games are aired each season but the league has guaranteed to Ofcom, the broadcast regulator, that it will make at least 190 available in the next three-year deal, which runs from 2019 to 2022.

As revealed by The Times, the Premier League is also considering introducing a prime-time Saturday night slot for live matches but will try to protect the group of matches still kicking off at 3pm on Saturdays, where no live domestic broadcast is permitted

The Football Supporters’ Federation has said that it has “major reservations” about a significant increase in televised football and wants the Saturday 3pm kick-offs to be protected. If the league decides to offer 210 games that would mean an extra 42 matches televised a year. As well as the Saturday night slot, there would be more matches shown midweek and on bank holidays.

There would also be occasions when two matches are screened live simultaneously so that viewers could choose which they watch.

The tender is expected to go out to broadcasters before Christmas with the auction to be completed in February.

In 2015, Sky and BT Sport paid a combined £5.1 billion — a 67 per cent increase — for the domestic rights with the bulk of the matches going to Sky.

Analysts do not expect a rise of any such proportion for the next domestic deal, even if a digital giant such as Amazon or Facebook submits a bid. BT Sport is also focused more on its Champions League coverage although it would covet the Saturday night slot, which could lead to some modest growth in the overall value of the rights.

Next week’s meeting will be the first since the ‘big six’ clubs — Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and the two Manchester sides — failed in their bid to secure a bigger share of overseas television rights. As a result, the bigger clubs may resist attempts to entice domestic broadcasters by giving greater access to players, managers and dressing rooms.

Works for me as well, i always remember Saint and Greavsie do the first live match ( Spurs v Forest) and they said a couple of times after the game that it was a great game and they hoped that the TV viewer enjoyed it, but they followed it up with " but of course its not as good as being at the ground" boy did their TV bosses kick their arses.

Firstly I think TV has offered a product for those who can not afford the live product.

Secondly where clubs suffer is not TV and too much coverage its where it sits in price points in comparison to other activities in a recreational field when people have more choices and more money but decide where it goes.

The price point of English football tickets is a shocker and the clubs that suffer the most are the ones that don't have the on the pitch product to match the cost.

I would disagree with most of that especially the pricing of live football, i have a ST ( home and away) and i think its good value. This discussion about prices comes up quite often but as i have said before its all about personal choices, I have mates who think nothing about throwing shed loads of cash on the latest ( all singing all dancing) phones, going out to eat at places where the food is vastly overpriced, the latest eurodance records, expensive contracts to Sky/ B.T etc,etc etc.

Now that is a personal choice they make ( just like i do with paying for my ST) but for them to say " football is overpriced" is laughable when you take into what they pay for their pleasures, not saying you spend on those pleasures? but IF you do then you touch yourself and takes your choice. That is not to say i would argue about my football fix being cheaper but to me its what i have to pay to enjoy what is my choice.

But I don't think we are talking Spurs here because the money matches the product but you look where clubs are empty and suffering for crowds its not the TV that does that its the fact people prefer to spend their money on what you mention above rather than the product on view. West Ham is a classic example, they are not half filling their stadium because of TV its because people would rather spend £50 on a night out with their mates than £30 for 3 hours watching brick football.
 
Football is over priced but most forms on entertainment are, West End shows and top name gigs are in the same ball park, when I first went with my Dad I think he paid about 4 shillings (20p) for us both.

That's the problem since Sky and the like reared their money making rip off's, you support a club through thick and thin ( at least fans used to do before the glory hunters came along). Now its a lot easier for fans to sit in their armchairs and complain about the game and pretend they know better then the mangers whose job it is, and then use the excuse that its prices that has stopped them from getting off their arses and going to games.

And usually they are the same folks who spend their money on the things i posted earlier, at REAL inflated prices, as i say its all about choice but saying its prices that have stopped them going is gonad*s ( imo).

The are two "die hard" arsenal fans at work, both under 30 both living with their parents, never have been to the Emmirates and the 19 year old one has just passed his driving test, got a car brought for him by mum and dad but he has to pay the insurance £1,300 a year. Mental but there you go.

And i bet they both have the all dancing/singing phones, the latest kids abacus games, go out and put the nose bags on, and all the other eurodance records all bought at really over the top prices. And then they complain about ticket prices, you could not make it up. o_O

I agree with your point about the money spent on "technology" and will never understand people who must have a 60 in tv want a smart phone to watch the tv on, but when I first went to work I had to work 75 minutes to earn entrance to a match now someone on minimum London wage would have to work 4 to 5 hours to get in a game.

I do except prices have gone up but compered to the price spent on " technology" and all the other things folks spend shed loads of money on my S/T is good value imo.

As i have said before " you touch yourself and takes yer choice " but moaning about ticket prices when folks are prepared to spend shedloads on other things makes no sense to me and is a poor excuse not to get out of their armchairs and go watch a game. imo.
