Football and TV

surely the onus is on southend and orient to attract new fans rather than rely on denial of alternatives

Why? if the FA believe that a deep professional league is a good thing and they believe the 3pm is helping they will point to the numbers to prove its working. The FA are in charge of the good of the game of the game in full.

Not arguing that the FA are good at their job or that this is a correct goal - just that the FA can argue its effective.

FA are in a difficult position, they are the guardians of the game and they should be promoting it at all levels (even woman's football) and getting more players playing. They need the tv money to do this so they must bend to them.

they only get a bit from the PL so they don't really have an incentive to remove the 3pm for this reason.

Would we be bothered if 3pm kick offs were reserved for grass roots and lower league football? Live matches would have to be Saturday 12:30 or 5:30, Sunday 12:30, 3:00 or 5:30, two PL games per slot, with all games available to stream.

I've always preferred attending live games with evening kickoffs, under the floodlights. Always feels like a better atmosphere.

Is 3pm good for our foreign viewers (have a blindspot for timezones) I am sure this is used when discussing the appeal of the PL.

I always thought it was licensing more than anything. The 3pm games are always on foreign channels, theres a whole territorial thing over what games are shown where isnt there?

I thought the Classico was sometimes moved early in order to compete with the PL in the more favorable time slot

European broadcasters are restricted to one 3pm game. Probably due to pubs using these satellite feeds to show games. Usually that's United or Liverpool unless they're picked for another slot. In the end it just means that it's harder to watch the smaller clubs.

Which goes back to my issue

I don't want to pay 60 quid a month to watch West Brom V Brighton.

it’s obviously a challenge but they do have some advantages, they are local and can work with schools and youth teams to offer coaching

lower league clubs need to address their pricing too, it’s ridiculously expensive for what it is, div 2 sides are charging over £20 for a league game, which is about what I paid per ticket for the CL package

there’s probably too many pro clubs, the entire system may benefit from a wider and better organised amateur game

You can see why the league clubs are against the pl capped away tickets and capped tickets in general.

As I mentioned elsewhere - League one and two need restructuring - would argue the would league system does.

because they are selling their product

The FA are looking at the full picture not just the individual clubs if they think they can improve the health in full by restricting the big that's what they should be doing. Obviously the individual clubs should be doing all they can to get new fans but if the FA can offer a tool (they think is best for all) why not use this as well.

To be honest I would be happy to either see no live games on tv or just a highlight programme. The scheduling of games has mucked up my weekends for years. My stroll over the local park to watch a game, followed by a couple of pints before my Sunday dinner are a thing of the past, even a Saturday night out sometimes gets buggered. At least this Sunday I'm going to see the best game of the year, my first look at my grandson playing.

Works for me as well, i always remember Saint and Greavsie do the first live match ( Spurs v Forest) and they said a couple of times after the game that it was a great game and they hoped that the TV viewer enjoyed it, but they followed it up with " but of course its not as good as being at the ground" boy did their TV bosses kick their arses.

And now we have a generation of armchair managers who think they know it all ( despite never seeing a live game).

It is due to an EU court ruling stating that it is not illegal for a pub landlord to buy a subscription from another European country and show the 3 PM kick off matches. My hope is that Brexit will lead to this ruling being overturned so the price of the Norwegian streaming service can be justified again.

Screw that, poxy sky make it hard enough for the traveling supporter as it is. As for your first question if you really support a club ( no matter what Lge you are in) why would any true supporter want to watch another team from their armchair?

I think the TV provider would care more about their few million subscribers than the 3000 traveling supporters, unfortunately. I am not saying it is a solution I want, I'm saying it is one possible solution.

The true supporters would probably still go to games, as you say. But would I? When I'm in London and the Spurs game is on Sunday, I generally try to catch a lower league game on the Saturday. But would I go to a local game in the rain and cold if I could sit down in the comfort of my favourite pub and watch a Premier League game instead? I hope I would take the proper footballing experience, but who knows?

I thought they managed to get around that somewhat with the copyright of Sky theme and interstitials

I also thought this is why they have the PL logo flashing up during the game?

It's like pornography and music videos, they're no comparison to the real thing

So are they now trying to move to a model where the income isn't distributed equally, like the la liga deal?

Premier League clubs have rejected an initial proposal to end the equal distribution of overseas TV money.

The six richest clubs - Emirates Marketing Project, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea - want their appeal reflected in their income.

And a plan - presented by the league's executive chairman Richard Scudamore - suggested 35% of global revenue should be divided based on league position.

But at a meeting on Wednesday, no vote was taken due to a lack of support.

Between this and and the coefficient based on past glories I'm really not happy with the way it looks like big teams are getting even more protectionism. (Is just a word?!). However if it needs 14 votes why would anyone outside the top 6 vote for it, would be like a turkey voting for Christmas! I always felt the Europa league was designed to make the top 4 harder to break into and now we've managed to do it I wouldn't like to pull the trapdoor up on anyone else.

the whole point of a game at 12.30pm on saturday is thats prime time viewing for viewers in Asia and the 5.30pm game is perfect timing for the US market before their sports day gets going (the PL is marketed as a "morning sport" in the US)
