Moussa Sissoko

I didn't see the match but he sounded like he was decent today. I hope Poch is going to work his wonders (he certainly appears to trust him) and he'll follow in the footsteps of late bloomers Rose, Lamela, Dier and Son...

I have been on this forum for years. I love to read the opinions of others and I just don't post a great deal.

In the Everton OMT there was quite a lot of criticism and support for Sissoko, with some good arguments on both sides. I think it was Scara that mentioned his stats - and they were fairly compelling, however I find it very hard to disagree with a lot of what Parklane says.

I'm not going to say he is a world beater but here's my 2p.

This season I believe he is going to become a really useful squad player for us. He has talent, we saw that at Saudi Sportswashing Machine and we've seen it for France. Poch obviously sees something on the training ground because if he didnt he'd get rid (at the first opportunity he shipped out Jannsen).

I only saw the MotD highlights on Saturday - I think he was very unlucky with his shot that blocked, there was no way Pickford was going to get to that, it was going in the corner and the defender didn't know anything about it. The header was poor, I think he just mistimed it - but how many opportunities did Harry miss in the first 3 games of this season? I think it is unrealistic to expect a striker to score every opportunity he gets - let alone a midfielder. By all accounts he had a good game and the fans gave him a good reception when he left the pitch.

I think the boy is suffering with his confidence, and I would love to see him get it back. The fact is, he is a Spurs player and we should get behind him - you never know, with our support, he may become more confident and we might just see the talent that Poch, Deschamps and the other managers he WORKS with see. Wouldn't that be good?

Quick experiment: does anyone disagree with any of the following?

'Sissoko's performance on Saturday was better than normal, though was below average for a current Spurs first team player.

I hope he continues to improve, and hope our fans continue to support him at the stadium and on social media.'

Arguments from authority are rarely good ones.

I agree with you there. Blindly following people in authority leads to them not being challenges, no improvement and generally it just isn't a good thing to do.

However, as Briddo says above, it's not just that Poch picks him, it's also that he is the kind of manager that is happy to turf players out of this club pretty quickly if they aren't meeting the standard. He may like them, and the players may work hard, but they also need to be showing quality and improvement because he wants us to always be improving and he wants the players to feel pushed.

If Poch didn't want Sissoko to be here, he would have made it explicitly clear that if he refused offers elsewhere, he wasn't going to be a part of the squad. The fact that he is here and starting, is a sign that in training and in his sub appearances, Sissoko has added some value.

I disagree, I thought it was average for a first team player. I didn't compare him to anyone else on the pitch and thought he was anywhere below, even to a minor degree.

I say this to posters regarding every player who doesn't hit the ground running in first season - judge them after a full pre season because most of our players show a marked improvement (not all but most) after a fitness regime with Poch. Most of our players are signed after most of pre season and will be difficult to get to grips with such high intensity demands, especially coming from a joke of a club like Saudi Sportswashing Machine. I expect to see his performances take an upward trajectory, just needs to improve his finishing now as he's getting into some good and dangerous positions....

Agreed. It's happened so many times now that we really should be reserving judgement as a matter of course.

Interesting. Find that hard to comprehend when Kane, Eriksen and Davies all had more positive contribution in final third? Thought Sissoko got into decent positions but then had no shots on target, didn't set up a single chance, and twice drifted offside when we had good counterattacks on.

Agree he was no worse than Alli.

Moussa Sissoko

Not many players can encapsulate the sublime and ridiculous within a split second, but the Frenchman can do just that.

However, there's no denying he does offer something to this Tottenham team. His direct running, pace and power are tools that combined are not available elsewhere among Pochettino's midfield options.

He will fluff something basic one moment, but his team mates do benefit from the breaks he embarks on and the space that can give to others.

Sorry to be a pedant but he had a shot on target that was blocked.

I'd say that "below average" is soft pedalling it a bit, but technically it's true.

Yesterday was a big improvement from him yesterday...he has at least started to make the right decisions even if their implementation is still a bit lacking. If he can continue this revival and upwards trajectory then happy days!
Nail on head: the decisions were the right ones, but the execution was left wanting. Seems very much like a confidence thing. Given some game time (and playing him in his better position), hopefully that will take care of itself and we'll see a player that contributes significantly to the team.
