I've just got through a mammoth week of assignments that drove me fudging nuts. All submitted and out the way now.

Was just wondering if anyone else has/ is doing studies at the open university and what your experiences were like?

i am - EMA due in 10 days.
Probably should make some headway on the essay!

What you studying?
 
Im doing history. I polishing off my first level one course at the moment AA100 but i'm doing a level 3 AA312 at the same time. Had to do two TMA's this week, plus got an EMA due for the level one course in a couple of weeks. I'M having a bash at that today. What course you doing?
 
Economics, Politics and Philosohpy (focus is on economics)
just finishing first L1 course - DB123

aa312 looks really interesting
 
So then, for you two in the know. How much time does an OU degree realisitcally take up? Can you work at your own pace and fast track if you're proficient or is it all over a designated time period? Worth the money compaired to evening classes?

the quickest you can pass is three years as you are restricted to studying no more than the equivalent of one year of full time study - ill probably take 4 years with working and living life tbh. well, thats my aim at least.

re; cost - assuming i stay on the pre sept 2012 fees (not decided yet) my degree will cost appx 6k in total (thats my calculations using my predicted inflation rate, should be accurate to within ?ú500 i reckon).

New fee structure will see an Hnours degree be appx ?ú15k (obv more from things like Law)
Re; evening courses - depends on your end goal i guess.
Im coming to the end of the a level 1 course - scores for assignments so far have been 87%, 90% and 88%. Havnt really needed to attend any tutorials, although the option was there if i wanted.

I would expect to need some tutorials as study gets harder.
 
time taken up - tricky one as it depends on the person.

but i think ive taken 10-15hours total to read the literature (that said, my units is on personal finance and its a subject i know a lot about - so i think ill have to study harder in future)

im pretty good at skimming texts and searching soft copies for info, but then im also really anal about details - i reckon ive taken 10-14 hours to plan and write each assignment (mixture of maths questions and essays for me so far)

what are you studying / thinking of studying Wookie?

oh - regarding new fees; the Govt havnt decided how this will be structured for part time learners yet (OU is classed as p/t irrespective of how intensely you study). Decision to be made in the summer
 
Is it true that the marking scheme is tougher, to get a 2:1 for example you need to average 10% higher than a traditional university

no, its a misconception

the OU use a different scale when it comes to marking than many "brick uni's" to give a wider spectrum for grading - but no, there isnt really a difference (well, in theory - but thats like asking "is it harder to pass X course at Oxford than it is at Sunderland Uni)

thats the simplified version - grading through the eduction sector is a very complex process (i used to work for an awarding body at FE/HE level)

Just a couple of environmental/geological avenues. It's not exactly a vanity project but not really necessary either so those new level of fees could be spent better elsewhere tbh.

nothing wrong with a bit of education as leisure!
but yeah, i think id want to be signing up pre Sept 2012 on that basis

there are courses with the OU that are not mapped to degree progression so likely to be unaffected by the fees(?) - might be worth a look
