The race for 86 points

It is! I just don't think we should be making DVDs about it. :p

We won't

Just highlighting that we have been (yet again) the only team to try to win the league besides the eventual winners

It's easy doing was Mou is doing and give up on it to focus on a cup but it's a lot lot harder to go for it with the experiences we have had and the injuries

I'm sure if Poch has come out and said what Moanhinio had said the media would be banging on about lack of ambition and short changing the fans, but they can't bring themselves to be critical of their "old girlfriend" just in case there's a chance of a shag.

It is disappointing to lose out on the league title for the second season running. It is clear we lack experience and luck to win the league title. We need to make sure we get maximum league points in the remaining matches. We need to use it as the benchmark to follow and overtake for the next 3 years. Then the magic of the year that ends in "1" will help us win the league title, FA Cup, League Cup, CL and whatever trophy on offer in 2021 !

Love the positivity

I wouldn't say that we're 'lost' the title in either year though. We were never expected to challenge properly and at no point have we been top and had it our grasp

How can you lose something you never had?

Slow starts were the difference in both seasons. We only really collapsed last season after all chance had gone. This season we were ten points behind Chelsea in December and have gained a bit, despite them being on target for most wins in a PL season (I think I heard that somewhere).

Chavski won 29 matches in Mourinho's first 2 seasons there (04/05 & 05/06), Conte still has the chance to make it to 30 this season if they can beat Watford and Sunderland...

If we win any of our final 3 matches, Pochettino will match the 84/85 tally; and that was a 42 game season!

OMG! Do you EVER get any joy out of ANYTHING? I'm sure if we won the League by 100 points you'd still find something to whinge about.

Chelsea didnt have European football; that will be different next season. What we do need to change though is gaining a little more depth in certain areas, mostly notably in my mind: CB, Dembele-cover and an attacker with either real pace or x-factor trickery to help open up defences

80 points at least; 2nd only to a team breaking records and put together at nearly 3 times the cost; unbeaten at home; Sent home City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Utd with tails firmly between their legs and came back from behind twice to beat the cup final specialists; meanest defence; best goal difference. The old girl has witnessed a great season. Maybe the footballing gods have again fallen in love with Tottenham Hotspur FC. Well done Mauricio and the team. Onwards and upwards.

And second to a team which didnt have the distraction of Europe this year. Our form in the last couple months has been excellent - had we had that in Oct and Nov as well, things would have been very different. That said, we could be better prepared for dealing with Europe as well as the league by adding a 2-3 players this summer who are as good as though which we have in the first 11 already in order that we have more depth. Main positions needed are CB, CM (Dembele cover) and attacker with some pace or trickery

AjaxDeSuperYids from elsewhere said:
...sometime ago someone posted that during Wenger's era, Arsenal have spent circa £1bn more than Spurs on their playing squad via net transfer fees and wages.

I was curious how we compared to Chelsea and it's truly staggering:

Transfer fees 1992 - 2017 --> Chelsea have spent £0.53bn more net than Spurs.
Wages 2001 - 2014 --> Chelsea have spent £1.05bn more net!

Given the years I have managed to get the data from, I think it's a fair guess that in the premier league era, the formerly virtually unknown west London club have spent in excess of circa £2bn more than Spurs.

Wow. £2bn. TWO BILLION QUID.

FWIW... just since the turn of the millennium...

Total spent on wages from 2000 to 2016

Chelsea: £2.31 billion
Man Utd: £2.05bn
Arsenal: £1.76bn
Emirates Marketing Project: £1.68bn
Liverpool: £1.66bn
Tottenham: £1.02bn

Then throw in transfer fees...

Cumulative cost of wages and net transfer fees from 2000 to 2016

Chelsea: £3.04 billion
Man Utd: £2.66bn
Emirates Marketing Project: £2.62bn
Liverpool: £2.07bn
Arsenal: £2.03bn
Tottenham: £1.18bn

So, over the past 16 seasons, we've spent roughly £849 million less than the Goons... and £1.86 billion less than the Russian lottery winners!

Those stats are startling. Wonder if Sky have ever done a feature on them?

Thought not.
