***OMT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs KAA Gent***

I don't see any punishment in a Poirot or Christian Eriksen avatar tbh.

Getting closer with this one?

Gotta make Wembley a Fortress, which is a huge challenge, coz every team going there to play will be sooo up for it.

And I want us to win a cup. Any cup ! Seriously, winning will breed a winning mentality and winning habbits.

--------------------Lloris

Walker---Alderweireld--Wimmer---Davies

-------------Dier----Winks

Son-----------Alli------------Eriksen

--------------Kane

Strongest team available with no Lamela, Verts or Rose.

2 exceptions:
- trying to get some confidence back into Dier by playing him in his best position, while resting Wanyama, who has played a lot recently
- Dembele has already played his game this week

Kill this one off by going full steam, then cruise through Fulham and the home leg a bit more

I would be very happy to see that team, as i said elsewhere lets win the game and then start to think about the Fulham game not before.

I think you are seeing what you want to see there too ;)
I am a massive fan of Dier but he's not had a good season, certainly not compared to last. There are mitigating circumstances of course but he looks off form to me.

He is being played out of position, its a really odd decision to move one of the key reasons we did well last season.

Wanyama is a great destroyer, but he is a poor footballer, we miss Dier's ball playing ability in the middle.

Wanyama is a good signing, but was it really in an area we needed to improve?

I think he is playing the position better than Dier did last season actually, on the ball and off it. Considering how good Dier was playing last time this just goes to show how well wanyama has done (Except for the pool match where he was crap)

Thing is, Wanyama has rarely had a poor game this year, in fact I think Liverpool could have been his only poor game. That's pretty decent in 30 games or so. Everyone is allowed a poor game every now and again. He just had a shocker. Dier has had a lot of poor games and we've been carrying him this season.

The Dier hate is a bit bizarre actually.

He's been moved to accommodate other players, still young, still learning and the lack of a single position or single system is harder. Is he as good a CB as Toby/Jan? no, but who the fudge is? Imagine if we had Stones or Cahill who cost tons more, and are far more limited players.

He's not had his best season, but the quality is there, maybe he could do with a rest, maybe a run in a single position. His form will return.

Back to thread ... I'd like to see a decent side out, aim for killing the tie early.

If we'd managed to snag Cahill back in January 2012, that season (and Harry's reign) would have ended on a much, much happier note. I'm sure of it. :(

Anyway, Dier only cost 5 mill, and we'll make a tremendous profit on him when (and if) we sell him - there's literally been no downside to his signing in terms of its financial impact. And on the field, he's been bloody good too, across RB, DM and CB - less so with that last position, but still not *awful* by any means.

We have better players than him at CB - that much is true. Toby and Jan are always first choice if they're fit, to my mind. But Dier's fine as a backup when either of them aren't around - he makes a lot of errors and he isn't the greatest, but then backup CBs rarely are. And given his youth, he may well iron those errors out with time.

I agree but there has to be a spacegoat for some fans and at the moment Dier seems to have taken that role. The kid is 23 and has played in several positions which has not helped him be consistant. last season he was given a role to do and was one of our best players.

Yeh no one has said he's a brick player. Most have just said that he's had a poor season, which he has and he even said at the start of the season that he hadn't started well. Unfortunately this has continued well into the season.

Wanyama is at least as good a player as Dier in every aspect of the game. I think he's better. Dier has become a bit of angry and dirty player. Getting turned and then hacking down players.

I think that's harsh on Dier, he's a young player who has done very well for us and England in a very short time. He has been shifted from centreback to fullback and midfield, plus playing in a three and four at the back. It doesn't help to keep changing a players role in a side and I can't remember many players who have been able to produce consistent performances with that continual change. All players have a dip in their form and I don't think there are any players not doing their best. As soon as we have a set back people are looking to blame someone, I wish people could just enjoy the relative success we are having, but I know I'm in the minority of liking the game win lose or draw, that doesn't mean I'm not desperately wanting us to win something, but if it doesn't happen it's not the end of the world, it's only a game.

Is it harsh on Dier that I think Wanyama is a better player? And he is kind of dirty. He seems more angry and frustrated this season. Last year he used his aggression in a positive way, except for the game at Cheatski. This year I think he uses that aggression in a more negative way, and it had affected his game.
