RIP Muhammad Ali

Don't often post in this threads but RIP. You could watch his fights or a textbook lesson in boxing then watch his interviews for a textbook lesson in stand up comedy.

His legacy will surely live on.

I don't know a lot about boxing but I thought the opposite was true. I always thought he was good despite not being a textbook boxer, that his technique (especially defensively) only really worked because of his extreme talent.

Fair point. I guess if you were teaching your kid how to deffend themselves saying 'stand in a corner and let them come at you' might only make matters worse.

“This is the legend of Cassius Clay,
The most beautiful fighter in the world today.
He talks a great deal, and brags indeed-y,
of a muscular punch that's incredibly speed-y.
The fistic world was dull and weary,
But with a champ like Liston, things had to be dreary.
Then someone with color and someone with dash,
Brought fight fans are runnin' with Cash.
This brash young boxer is something to see
And the heavyweight championship is his des-tin-y.
This kid fights great; he’s got speed and endurance,
But if you sign to fight him, increase your insurance.
This kid's got a left; this kid's got a right,
If he hit you once, you're asleep for the night.
And as you lie on the floor while the ref counts ten,
You’ll pray that you won’t have to fight me again.
For I am the man this poem’s about,
The next champ of the world, there isn’t a doubt.
This I predict and I know the score,
I’ll be champ of the world in ’64.
When I say three, they’ll go in the third,

So don’t bet against me, I’m a man of my word.
He is the greatest! Yes!
I am the man this poem’s about,
I’ll be champ of the world, there isn’t a doubt.
Here I predict Mr. Liston’s dismemberment,
I’ll hit him so hard; he’ll wonder where October and November went.
When I say two, there’s never a third,
Standin against me is completely absurd.
When Cassius says a mouse can outrun a horse,
Don’t ask how; put your money where your mouse is!
I AM THE GREATEST!”

Muhammad Ali

A true legend. He is the reason that many minorities stopped fearing to speak. An amazing boxer. An inspiration for so many. Long may his memory live.

Not only the Greatest sportsman ever, but one of the Greatest persons.
Boxing was not a general sport watched by "normal" sports fans before he arrived - watched only by true boxing fans.
With his showmanship he transferred it to millions of other non boxing people. Me included
I remember the "thriller in Manila" I was there that day on work. I think the government had set the ticket prices very low to get the crowds in.
I could not get a ticket, even on the black market. Everybody wanted to see Ali. I think boxing was/is very popular there.
The current boxers should be grateful to Ali that he made the sport what it is today. A mega money making sport.
And don't forget what he did for the civil rights movement in the US.
A man of principles that stood up to his beliefs.
RIP GREAT man. We will ALWAYS remember you.

......and a member of a racist religious group that believed in UFOs.

Seriously, were you bullied at school? Genuine question? Or was it the priest?

You seem to troll every thread when it comes to religion in a demeaning way.

I totally understand your beliefs but the World here; Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic and Atheist are putting that aside whilst they talk about the man himself on this day.

Do you have to comment all the time?

What an iconic figure.

It's difficult to compare eras, but what is surprising is how small Ali was compared to heavyweights of the modern era. In the rematch v Liston, Ali weighed in at 14st 9lbs. Foreman was called 'Big George' back then and when he fought Ali, he weighed 15st 10lbs.

When Lennon Lewis beat Tyson, he weighed 17st 11lbs. I remember Nigel Benn saying how everything moves forward and that Ali would have been too small in the modern era and when I looked up the numbers, he has a point. But then if he had fought in modern times, he probably would have been bigger...

I also 2nd 'When we were Kings', saw it when I was a kid, a fascinating watch.

Quite the opposite - my school wasn't religious and I was always an athlete then a stoner at school, so always outside the bullying hierarchy.

It's not trolling, just putting people straight on the facts.

I totally understand your beliefs but the World here; Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic and Atheist are putting that aside whilst they talk about the man himself on this day.
And I don't rate him as a man.

He was arrogant about his ability in the ring which was fully deserved. He was also arrogant about his beliefs and intelligence, neither of which deserved it.

Do you have to comment all the time?
If he had just been a boxer a simple comment on his boxing would have been enough. If I'm still around when Lennox Lewis dies, that's exactly what I'll do - when Mike Tyson goes I'll expect there to be a fair few comments about what a clam he is along with being a good boxer.

He chose to publicly make political statements about religion and politics, making himself a political figure. Therefore, his political and religious idiocy is just as relevant for comment as his boxing - especially as so many people are inexplicably positive about his out of the ring behaviour.

Simple lesson for simple athletes being; don't say stupid brick if you wouldn't want to be judged on it.

:D I started breaking down you replies but it actually got me chuckling. The first part - doesn't mean you weren't bullied and you identify athletes and 'stoners' as those who do not get bullied (perhaps in an American popular culture video).
Part two: That's trolling.
Part three; so again it's about religion which you concur.
Part four; so you do (and his statements and beliefs lead to a lot of changes for people all over the World).

That's just how it was in my school - I assumed all were the same. You don't get bullied when you're on the rugby team - it just doesn't happen. And when I got into other things instead of sport, I just wasn't around other kids enough for it to happen - although it might well have done had I been.

Part two: That's trolling.
Not at all - I don't want a reaction from the religious, I want them to realise their mistake.

Part three; so again it's about religion which you concur.
And politics.

His statements and beliefs (for a while) promoted a racist religion - is that acceptable to you?

too young to see him fight but watching him light the flame at at the Olympics in 96 was one of those real emotional sporting moments, such a brave thing to do with his condition, arguably the most well known sportsman in the world, hope his family get the closure they need

Not a boxing fan but he made you want to watch, and normally I would hate a loud mouth with views so out of step with almost everyone else, but I loved him.
He was a contradiction that transcended everything and everyone.

He won the gold medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960 fighting as a light heavyweight.
