The General Transfer Rumours and Speculation Thread

Mods... any chance we could have a general Transfer Thread for "between-window" speculation? I don't want to start one if there's a policy not to have one, and it definitely makes sense to only open the transfer sub-forum around the window. But transfer rumours are still showing up in the media (apparently we are in "very advanced talks" to sign Michy Batshuayi - if you believe L'Equipe) and it's not unreasonable to want to discuss them... also; it'll keep the Berahino stuff out of the Pritchard thread!

Cheers @milo . And just to kick the thread off, another report on the potential Michy Batshuayi deal...

It is being reported today that Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi.

Tottenham had been very closely linked with the Belgian forward all winter, but his club were not in the mood to do a deal then, it appears that has now changed.

This news actually originated in French publication L’Equipe who are the ones that have reported that Spurs are in ongoing talks to sign him.

Batshuayi would be a catch for sure, he has scored 21 goals in 46 games for Marseille and even his asking price is reasonable, said to be in the region of £25million.

The Belgium international is just 22 years of age and fits the profile of the sort of player that Spurs like, a young talented player that is very likely to progress.

It is reasonable to believe that this deal will happen, it may only be February, but that does not mean that agreements cannot be reached earlier, which appears to be what is happening in this particular case.

I Still don't understand why we pulled the plug on the Dembele deal. It was reported that we tried to change the deal at the last minute and wanted him immediately rather than wait till the summer. But even if it was Fulham that requested the change, with a young player with lots of potential and a de minimus transfer price, surely we either wanted him or we didn't. If we had to wait six months before we got him, then in the greater scheme of things, so what? This just seems bizarre to me.

Don't think there's any chance of us signing a £30m CF. It would just send all the wrong messages to Kane.

He needs support, not someone who would be expecting to start ahead of him

I think we'll finalise a deal for Dembele fairly shortly. Like we did with Wimmer 12 months ago.

It's very much in Fulham's interest to have him sign for an English club.

We have 20 something million Son and 30m Lamela competing for the same position - I'm not sure it's an issue

We'll be in the CL and need two quality players for every position if we are to build on the success of this season
Unfortunately GB still thinks its possible to get through a season with a first XI and a handful of subs

CFs are a bit different (like GKs too). They need their ego massaged and to know they are the undisputed #1 main man to perform to their best.

That goes against everything to do with the TEAM and SQUAD ethic that Poch is trying to build..and you no doubt know it...

No. I think we need a tight 22 man squad with no bloat. But I'd continue to back talented kids over journeymen - e.g. promoting 2CV to 4th CB and backing Bentaleb as the 4th CM/Dier's cover.

I just think that Kane's outstandingness gives us a great headache. Just like in 2013 you wouldn't buy a £30m deputy for Bale, now you can't buy an understudy for Kane who'd expect much gametime.

Why not spend £30m on De Gea to understudy Lloris then?

Or spend £30m on Stones to understudy Alder?

Don't they need competition rather than cover?

Nowhere near the same situation and you know it...forget the quoted transfer fees. The point is I cannot see Poch say no to a striker "because he doesn't want to hurt Kane's feelings".
He wants to build a young, fit, trim and malleable squad. If Michy Batshuayi brings skills to complement AND compete with Kane to become a second CF/no. 9 in our squad AND the price is right, i don't think hurting Kane's feeling will put a stop to a deal being done..

Kane doesn't need to feel he's any more comfortable keeping his place than Walker, Lloris or Alderveireld. Fight for your place is a good philosophy based on all other areas why should CF be any different. After all, that's how Kane got there in the first place.

You have to think he would thrive on the competition and use it as a means to improve himself and push himself as a player, that's what we want from him.

Whilst that's definitely true in some instances I dont think it's something which is set in stone across the board. And I certainly don't think it applies to Kane, nor any other player Poch would want in his squad
