Anybody here play snooker?

the dza

Christian Ziege
I used to play fairly regularly and could enjoy it because I could pot a few balls. My highest break is 67 and I used to knock in 30s and 40s when I played.

Anyway, that was years ago...fast forward, and I've just started playing again with a fella from work. But I am phucking crap! Played for the second time today and was a bit better, but still not cueing that great.

Anybody who plays/used to play got any tips for getting back into the groove? I think I improved today simply because I was standing a little better, gripping the cue in a better place and my eyes were going properly between the cue ball and object ball when I was feathering up. I still found I cued across the ball a bit though, especially if I had to put any power into the shot.

Any helpful little tips would be much appreciated. I'm hoping that as I play a bit more, I'll have a bit of a eureka moment and it will all feel much more natural again. I was never Ronnie O'Sullivan, but I could play to a standard where I found the game more enjoyable, if that makes sense.

Used to play a lot when I was younger, but not recently. Play quite a bit of pool nowadays as we have a table in the office (tossy, I know, before anyone bites).

Might sound silly, but I've got a pool game app which I play on my commutes, and it weirdly really helped my real-life game! Maybe if there's a snooker app out there, could be worth downloading it and seeing if it has the same effect?

There are some Ronnie O'Sullivan videos out there that helped me loads...All just about the basics but made the world of difference.

We've got a pool table in the staff room at work, I am pretty good at pool. But I have found that it's kinda ruined my snooker game for some reason (maybe playing with a tiny cue messed my snooker cue-action up with my snooker cue).

I'm the only person in the world without a smartphone haha, no apps for me! :)

@Grays_1890 yeah I'll keep looking on youtube mate, I have found a few helpful coaching vids on there. Just the little things that make a lot of difference. In the end, I think I'll just need more practice.

It's weird really, I was probably at my best at snooker when I was about 10, I progressed fairly quickly to a solid standard of say a consistent 40 break player and was improving. And then I just stopped playing for a couple of years, then I picked it up again for a bit. But I haven't played with any regularity since my late teens. I do regret not keeping it up when I was younger, I think I would have been a pretty decent club player otherwise.

For now, my target is to go and score a 30+ break. It shouldn't be that bloody hard, but we'll see!

Played snooker a fair bit years ago. Play less often now, last time was about a year ago but my standard doesn't go down that much. I was always naturally talented without the big breaks:)
My highest was 51.
It should come natural like driving a car shouldn't it...

8 Ball Pool by Miniclip?

Played 3/4 nights a week between 2004-2010. Highest break 101.

Key pointers:

Enjoy the game first and foremost
Keep a firm bridge hand
Ensure you start by hitting the cue ball in the centre as much as possible. Avoid side until you 'get your eye in'

Google 'Jack Karnehm' snooker basics. They'll really help. Feel free to ask any questions in this thread.

101, very nice! :)

That name (Jack Karnehm) rings a bell from when I used to play as a kid, I will check that out. Cheers Roy.

Used to play a bit as a teenager, highest break was only about 30 but one thing it did sort out was my cueing action. I can still hold my own on a pool table!

Used to get 50s and 60s on a regular basis, used to play all the time as my uncle was manager of a snooker hall then he went mental and that stopped my fun

Managed to knock in a 43 today, 7 reds 6 pinks, run out of position on the last red. Was nice to feel like I could actually play a little bit!

Now the target is to get 50+ break.

Me and a mate went to the final session of the 2008 world final, might've been his third one? We spent the afternoon watching in a hotel terrified because it looked as if it was going to end with a session to spare...! Eventually though we got to see two quick frames, and the presentation.

Oh, and the streaker.

Used to go to Rileys loads in my late teens. Got to a point where I was pretty ace at pool. Was playing for position on every shot, playing spin/side to suit, and generally doing pretty well.

One day all the tables were taken so we figured we'd have a go at snooker (always loved to watch). Bloody hell I could barely hit a ball! Thinking Id be at least somewhere near competent I instead played as if Id never seen a cue before.

I havent even played pool in years, but would love to get into either. Might look at joining up somewhere...

I played a lot at home as a child on a miniature table (probably not even 6') from a young age, maybe around 6 or 7. I loved it and was pretty good, but for whatever reason I never graduated up to playing on a full size table for years. Probably the first time I played on one I was around 14-15. By that time, I'd played too much pool and it was a tough adjustment. It's a shame, looking back.

I probably had 2 bursts of playing fairly regularly though, the first around 14-15 and then another in my mid 20's for a couple of years. I never got beyond making 20-ish breaks though, and as much I enjoyed it, it could be a very frustrating game! Haven't picked up a cue for many years now. Would be nice to revisit though...

Went out with a girl at school who babysat for Willie Thorne's kids. She said he came downstairs wearing a dressing gown that fell open, and he said "Now you know why they call me Willie".

I'm a pretty good pool player... but as others have said, snooker is sooooo much more difficult than pool. I reckon they should increase the pocket size for amateurs, to get more people interested... it would be a great game if you felt you had a good chance with each shot, but you find yourself thinking "there's no flippin way this will go in..."
