Kieran Trippier

They'd all played in the champions league ffs and their countries some in major tournaments. Getting relegated with Burnley doesn't compare with this.

By which token, any signing from a biggish club in a small league is likely to be considered experienced.

I think one way of looking at our signing policy is that we are having to take calculated risks on players that bigger clubs are passing up on. The reason we picked up Modric is that there were questions about whether he could cope with the physical side of the game. Similarly, there were questions about the other foreign signings mentioned.

Not sure i agree with that, its a bit like saying if berbatov was quicker he could play on the defenders shoulder. You play to your attributes, if you can stand in a more offensive position that is not text book optimal, but have the pace to readjust then thats perfect. Its only if you dont have the pace and cannot recover where its the issue

The bit where I disagree is I do not believe Walker would have the skills to make up for his lack of pace if he wasn't as quick as he is. Seems to be a difference of opinion on this.

Dont think anybody would have a clue to be honest, if he never had pace he could have ended up playing in goal. He has pace so of course you would rely on it. If Fazio was 5ft 2 i doubt he would be a centre back!

But he does have the pace so what does it matter? If he loses his pace due to consistent injuries or at a late stage in his career Im sure he would adjust his game and focus on other areas....

Who said anything about them being unknown?

How many of them had experience in a major league?

These signings were completely in line with our recruitment policy, as is Trippier. They were bought with a view to developing. If they were the finished article they would have been out of our price range or gone to a bigger club.

Those guys are Champions League veterans. That overrules any experience of a big league. Those guys were also internationally known as well. To those of us outside the UK, it was pleasant to see the club buy them.

I think that you are missing the point I was trying to make. The reason they joined us and not a bigger club is because either there were question marks over them or they were not fully developed. I had a go at expanding on this in this post

It matters because he is out of position even with his pace. It's flawed IMO to simply say if he was slower he would make up for it in other areas, my point is that he doesn't have the football brain if you will to no where he should be a lot of times.

The guy has a reputation for a mean cross and many assists throughout a season, especially the season back when Burnley got promoted....too bad we sold crouchie!

Decent game from the Tripster. Not a shade on Walker in defending but, my goodness, those crosses are wicked.

Can we hybridise him with Kyle? Would be the perfect fullback...

Yeah, that would be something.

The two offer us different options at least. For a game today where we were likely to enjoy a lot of possession he was a good choice I think, and made the difference with a nice cross towards the end.

Like with Davies last season I think he needs at least a season to settle in to our style of defending before judgement is cast on his ability defensively.

I picked both him and Dier and at the beginning of the season (for my FF team) but had to release both due to lack of games...

Toby's done alright though!!!!

Hmmm...watching the highlights on MOTD, i wonder if Trippier will be our go-to RB when we decide to switch to 3-5-2 vs teams who will not look to attack us at pace on the wings, and who will give US space on our attacking flanks (e.g. his crosses are so much better than Walker's)?

Thoughts?

Even 4-2-3-1 (or similar) he could be a go to choice for games we expect to dominate possession in.

But so far this season Walker has been very good and Trippier has been average at best when given the chance. Was better today and will probably improve further as he settles in. But right now Walker offers more in enough areas to make him first choice for just about every type of game. Until Trippier further ups his game...

I don't think the Watford goal would have happened had Walker been on as I don't think Deeney would have won the header that went into the box had Walker been on the pitch. The ball to Deeney was in the air a while and he won it no problem, whereas I think Walker would've at least put Deeney off and at best won it.

On the other hand I've never seen Walker put in crosses of the quality that Trippier did and Poch made the right call in resting Walker.

I think Trippier would be useful as a make shift right mid. His lack of pace or lack of urgency to defend makes him a liability in Poch's high line defence IMO.

I think he thrives on the space a full back gets when attacking. Lamela (or Eriksen, Son etc) can attract the attention of the opposing full back leaving Trippier in a bit of space to receive the ball and put a cross in.

I'm not sure he would be as effective going forward from a more advanced position. Unless we're looking to park the bus there are a lot of players I would rather see as a make shift right midfielder ahead of him.

His defending looks fine to me, though like Davies before him he's taken some time to get used to our system it seems.
