Serious relegation fears

I could not find an appropriate thread and I figured this topic needs one. If we win on Monday we go 5th. The race is on and when I consider Chelsea's current form and the ordinariness of Man Utd this season I really think we have a valid opportunity

That's a home defeat on Monday then

But in all seriousness I think both Chelsea and United are on shaky ground for finishing in the top 4 this season - and we're as in good a shape as any to take advantage

We're definitely in the race. Only Arse and City nailed on to finish before us, I think.

Chelski are too far behind, Pool will be in the race (but I think we are better than them) and United could come good. I don't think Leicester or West Ham will last. If we keep tight at the back and keep grinding out results, top four is well within reach.

Then again, Christmas is still two months away, so these are still very early days.

Plus Chelski surely are CL favourites now.

I hope we can find a suitable forward and sign them on the 1st of Jan. If so who knows, anything is possible.

We've reacted to last season where we conceded too many goals and we are hard to beat now. From this foundation, we need to score more and attack with more incision. If we can improve going forward while keeping tight at the back, we will be right up there.

Challenging for top 4 this season will probably mean being within range of 1st. There may not be a lot between the top 4 places this season.

Can you imagine if we nab 4th and Chelski win the CL again? I'll go jump off something really high.

I think that the Champions League winners get their own place now if that happens? Meaning the team in 4th won't miss out. I might be wrong but I think the rule was implemented at the same time as giving a Europa League winner a Champions League spot

I think the latest change only allows the EL winner entry without it affecting anyone else, ie. 5 places instead of 4.

Starting with last season's final tally and adjusting for each game that is played.

Seeing as we lost to Villa last time, Monday is an excellent opportunity.

How come we missed out when Chelsea won the CL?

Since England has had 4 places (2003-4) the average number of points required to finish in 4th position is 69 points - we have done this on 3 times and yet not qualified on two occasions - how sexy!

My thoughts at the start of the season were that the top 4 would almost certainly be the top 4 again this season and that the best we could do was ensure that we were 'next cab off the rank' and accumulate as many points as we could over 70.

Although Man U have been below par they are still likely to be at least 3rd - they won't excite but will be functional. In isolation draws with Emirates Marketing Project and at Palace are decent points.

Chelsea's demise has been fascinating, unexpected but more particularly highly amusing. However, with or without Jose they are capable of stringing a lot of good results together. One imagines that Leicester and West Ham will find things much tougher after Christmas leaving us, Liverpool and Southampton to challenge Chelsea for 4th. We really need to ensure that we get points off Chelsea as both Liverpool and Southampton have both got maximum points at Stamford Bridge.

People writing off Chel53a is way too premature. We're 11 games through a 38 game season FFS

They'll need to find some pretty exceptional form to make up the deficit though. Hard to see them get any more than 75 points and that's assuming they actually get their brick together.
