Exactly. It always happens in the West, including England. But the Western media never make a big issue out of it. Only when it happens in an enemy country like Russia, the Western media make a big issue out of it. Remember how the English media and the FA defended their racist captain Terry ? Or how West Ham fans used to racially abuse Mido ?

Ignoring the English media or incidents here for one moment. Do you think that there is widespread racism in Russian football?

@AP_Sports: Zenit St. Petersburg star striker Hulk says he encounters racism in "almost every game" in Russia http://apne.ws/1GvLT77 #FIFA
Hulk, the most expensive signing in Russian Premier League history, has repeatedly faced monkey chants in Russia and also accused a referee of racially abusing him.

"If (racism) happens in the World Cup, it will be really gross and really ugly. Usually it happens when Russian clubs play and it doesn't come out to the world and the world doesn't know about this," he said through a translator.

"I must say that almost every game I see this happening. I used to get angry, but now I see this doesn't help, so I just send a kiss to our fans and try not to get angry."

In the first game of the new Russian league season Friday, Ghanaian player Emmanuel Frimpong, formerly of Arsenal, said he was racially abused by the crowd while playing for FC Ufa against Spartak Moscow.

Frimpong was sent off for an offensive gesture to Spartak fans and faces a ban of between two and four games.

Frimpong said on Twitter that he had been "racially abused for the game that I love."

He added: "I'm going to serve a sentence for being abused ... and yet we (are) going to hold a World Cup in this country."

Last season, two Moscow clubs, Spartak and Torpedo, were punished after their fans abused Hulk with monkey chants. The Russian capital will host the 2018 World Cup final.

After the Torpedo incident, Zenit coach Andre Villas-Boas branded the abuse of Hulk a "disaster" for Russian football, adding: "The insults, the racist insults to Hulk, they go around the world, and this is the image of the Russian Premier League."

In December, Hulk alleged he was racially abused by Russian referee Alexei Matyunin during a league game. The referee was cleared by a Russian Football Union panel, which ruled there was insufficient evidence.

A report published in February by the anti-discrimination group FARE found more than 200 incidents of racist and discriminatory behavior linked to Russian football over two seasons. The Russian government disputes the figures.

I see AVB is playing the corporate, political game for Russia now. Well he was always smart enough to do that most times. Remember how much he defended Terry after he "used racist language" against Ferdinand?
I doubt he really believes all of what he says...

Are you serious? monkey noise chants, throwing bananas, protests against black players ... all par for course

I agree. I was just trying to find out what @Spurs7891 thinks because he is always very quick to dismiss stories like this.
I can only assume Spurs7891 still thinks it's the 1970s if he really believes things are just as bad here in England o_O

Russian MP's Obama with banana picture sparks racism debate | World news | The Guardian
The subject of racism has become the focus of a public discussion in Russia after an MP from the Duma caused outrage by posting an image of Barack Obama on Twitter that was photoshopped to include a banana.

Irina Rodnina, an MP from Vladimir Putin's United Russia party and a triple Olympic champion figure-skater, posted the picture on her personal Twitter account.

The image features Obama chewing, while a hand in the foreground waves a banana at him.

Racism is rife in Russia, and black football players often face racial abuse involving bananas. In 2011, the Brazilian Roberto Carlos, playing for Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala, left the pitch in anger after a banana was thrown at him from the stands. In a separate incident, the club Zenit St Petersburg was fined the equivalent of about £6,300 when a fan offered Carlos a banana before a match.

Rodnina, who lived in the US for many years, deleted the photograph but has not apologised and remains unfazed by accusations of racism. Instead, she suggested that the wave of criticism she prompted from liberal journalists and other Russians was a conspiracy.

Racism is rife in English football with over 350 incidents from the Premier League to grassroots since 2012, investigation reveals
  • An investigation has revealed a widespread racism problem in England
  • Information from 24 police forces - only around half of the number in the country - reported over 350 incidents since 2012
  • Chelsea supporters have been involved in the highest number of incidents
  • Charity Show Racism The Red Card said racism is a societal problem

Racism is widespread in English football with police having to deal with hundreds of incidents from the top of the game right down to grassroots level, an investigation has revealed.

It also revealed that Chelsea supporters have been involved in the highest number of reported racist incidents as they travelled to and from matches on trains.

It follows the high-profile case of a black man who was prevented from boarding a train in Paris by Chelsea fans as they sang a racist song, with five of them due in court this week.

Chelsea supporters have been involved in the highest number of reported racist incidents

The information, gathered from 24 police forces across the country, shows there have been over 350 incidents since 2012.

But as that only accounts for around half the police forces in the country, the actual figure is likely to be much higher.

The charity Show Racism The Red Card said the number of incidents shows that racism is a societal problem and it was particularly shocked by the number of incidents of racist abuse at children's matches.

The British Transport Police said since 2012 it had dealt with 15 incidents of alleged racism involving Chelsea fans, the most of any club in the country.

Manchester United were second with 10 incidents, followed by Leeds with 10, West Ham with eight, Arsenal with four and Portsmouth with four.

A club spokesman for Chelsea said of the investigation: 'The club's position on discriminatory behaviour is clear and we work closely with relevant authorities on their investigations.'

Greater Manchester Police reported 46 incidents, which included a man cleaning a toilet in a stadium being told 'that's a f****** black man's job, you f****** n*****' and a manager at a children's game being told 'I'll do you, I'm gonna wait for you outside, I'm going to do you, you f****** n*****'.

The force also said that on two occasions a letter was written to a specific footballer containing racist abuse and during a game someone shouted 'what is this the United Nations, how many chinks and w*** do you need?'.

Hertfordshire Police recorded 11 incidents of alleged racist abuse at children's football games, while Northamptonshire Police said that during a non-league game a man was spat at and racially abused before eventually having his leg broken in a strong challenge.

Gavin Sutherland, campaign co-ordinator at Show Racism The Red Card, said: 'This data from police forces around the UK shows that although football clubs have taken strong action against people using racist language inside stadiums, racism is a real problem within society.

'People who exhibit racist behaviours in 2015 are doing so, in the main, away from football grounds.

'Especially worrying are the incidents of racist abuse at youth team football matches. People engaged in racist abuse at these venues know that they are more likely to get away with it, because of facilities, a lack of stewarding and security, but the impact on young people will be considerable.

'Primarily, they are being exposed to racism, which in itself is frightening, but also it may influence their own behaviour.'

Other incidents included Cleveland Police reporting repeated monkey sounds and gestures during a Middlesbrough v Blackburn game in November last year and Devon and Cornwall Police said a man was headbutted and racially abused during a non-league game.

Surrey Police said a referee received racist insults during a kids' game and Essex police said a footballer refused to shake hands with a player from the opposite team before racially abusing him.

Due to the fact that some police forces were unable to provide the information or did not reply to the request, Mr Sutherland said there would certainly be a greater number of cases.

'These incidents, although shocking in themselves and how geographically widespread they are, will be just a part of the picture,' he said.

'These are the incidents that have been reported. There will certainly be a greater number unreported and under-investigated.

'Show Racism The Red Card has always stated that the reason racism manifests in football is that it is a societal problem.

'The campaign works with young people and adults not just to educate against racism, but encourage the use and development of critical thinking skills to break down the misinformation that supports racist beliefs.'

A club spokesman for Chelsea said of the investigation: 'The club's position on discriminatory behaviour is clear and we work closely with relevant authorities on their investigations.'

As you can see from the above report, racism is just as bad in English football but the English media never reports it. So the Western media should look at their own backyard before trying to accuse other countries like Russia. The truth is racism exists in every country of the world. Frankly, the West doesn't care about racism problem in Russia. They are only trying to undermine the World Cup in Russia just like what they did to the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Must say, only the English are brave enough to racially abuse or bully someone in their own country. There was the Paris incident where the Chelsea fans stopped the black man from boarding the train. Now look at this Singapore incident where this Englishman is bullying a poor local guy all because he was wearing a t-shirt with the words "I'm Fuc king Special". :D

Cranky old Englishman causes scene on MRT after taking offence at someone's t-shirt; gets kicked out
By Coconuts Singapore July 10, 2015 / 15:45 SGT

Despite the already agonising conditions of being packed like sardines on the MRT carriage, one crotchety old man decided to cause a scene when, for some reason, he took personal offence to someone wearing a T-shirt that says "I'm Fuc king Special".

Perhaps he grew up in a cult that shuns bad words, or maybe a graphic tee touched him in the wrong places when he was little, but whatever the case, you can just see how enraged he is by the whole thing.

Quite amazingly, the dude wearing the T-shirt managed to keep calm throughout and refused to engage with the crabby Englishman, who even threatened to beat him up.

See the whole thing unfold in the footage captured by Nabilah Nasser, whouploaded it on her Facebook page.

Things started to escalate when the bewilderingly offended old man wanted to lay his hands on the innocent dude, but luckily a fellow commuter (identified as Hanafie) stepped in and berated the man, demanding him to get out when the train reached Ang Mo Kio MRT station. Also, note their verbal exchange of "What's your problem" and "It's my problem" that went on a vicious loop.

The whole altercation came to an end when several police officers and SMRT personnel asked him to step outside — and thats when the other commuters in the carriage finally found their balls and started yelling at him.

Hanafie stepped outside as well, and probably explained the whole situation to the officers — kudos to you bromie for stepping up to the plate while others simply averted their gaze.

As for the grouchy old man, nobody knows what happened to him. Maybe the police punished him by making him wear a T-shirt that says "I'm Fuc king Repulsive".

Very funny. He was very fortunate not to get beaten up ! Maybe he thought the British are still ruling Singapore ! Or maybe he has a daughter or wife with the name "Special". :p

@Spurs7891 ignore England for a moment (happy to pick it up again later) - do you think that there is a problem with racism in Russian football?

As you can see from the above report, racism is just as bad in English football but the English media never reports it. Frankly, the West doesn't care about racism problem in Russia. They are only trying to undermine the World Cup in Russia just like what they did to the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Racism has clearly not been eliminated in any Western nation and lower level football / Chavski is rife with the scum of society but to try and say these incidents prove that racism is as acceptable here in England as it is in Russia seems a bit of a stretch.

Well unless you can point me in the direction of some incidents that the British press have (as part of this Western conspiracy against Mother Russia) neglected to cover involving:

Swastikas being unfurled during top level football matches?
MPs for the ruling party making racist jokes about the US president for their followers on social media?
Black Premier League footballers having bananas thrown at them?

And, considering how little punishment is metered out to the racists at Russian top flight games, I can only imagine the number of incidents they must have at the lower levels which never get reported.

Scale of racism in Cup host Russia a threat, report says | Daily Mail Online
Researchers from the Moscow-based SOVA Center and the Fare network, which helps to prosecute racism cases for European football's governing body UEFA, highlighted more than 200 cases of discriminatory behavior linked to Russian football over two seasons.

"It shows a really quite gruesome picture of a domestic league which is full of aspects of racism, xenophobia: The far-right play a significant role in the fan culture," Fare executive director Piara Powar said in an interview with the Associated Press.

The report collated dozens of cases where fans carried out campaigns and sold far-right merchandise to collect money for imprisoned neo-Nazis. It provides a detailed breakdown of discriminatory incidents around matches, pinpointing 72 displays of neo-Nazi symbols, 22 acts against people from the Caucasus region, which includes Dagestan and Chechnya, and five occasions of abuse against black people. The report, which covers 2012-14, does not include an apparent rise in the targeting of black players being documented this season, Fare said.

The report acknowledges rules were implemented in 2011 designed to combat discrimination at games, and welcomes the introduction of a "Spectator Law" in 2014, but that only regulates behavior inside venues.

The number of incidents of racism around stadiums has not decreased despite the threat of sanctions, including fines or stadium closures, the report says.

"This is not surprising because the boundaries of what is accepted in the football fan scene are blurry," the report says. "Well-known coaches and players have photos taken with fans wearing swastika tattoos or T-shirts with Nazi symbols, and well-known singers sing songs with them in the stands."

The report particularly highlights offensive conduct by fans of Moscow clubs CSKA, Dinamo, Lokomotiv and Spartak, and Zenit St. Petersburg. There is a prevalence of neo-Nazi and fascist symbols being adopted by far-right fan groups, including swastikas and Celtic crosses, and banners such as "White Pride World Wide."

"This is not surprising given the fact that xenophobic attitudes inside the fan community correlate directly with high levels of ethnic xenophobia in Russian society in general which have been developing intensively since the early 2000s," the report says.

Although only five cases of abuse against black people were recorded by Fare in 2012-14, Powar attributed that to the lack of stadium spotters to uncover the full scale of the problem. The report only covers until May 2014, and there have been high-profile incidents since then.

"One of the things we are picking up from our preliminary monitoring this season is the abuse of black players — Africans and those from Latin America," Powar said.

There have been cases where the Russian Football Union punishes the victims.

FC Rostov midfielder Guelor Kanga, from Gabon, was himself banned for three matches for an offensive gesture to Spartak Moscow fans who racially abused him in a Russian Premier League game in December. Spartak was only fined 70,000 rubles ($1,300) for "the chanting by fans of insulting expressions," a charge which usually refers to swearing, rather than the separate offense of racist chanting. That game took place at Moscow's Otkrytye Arena, a 2018 World Cup venue.

Rostov coach Igor Gamula served a five-match sanction for discriminatory comments about black players in his own team.

"Racist attitudes and ultra-rightist ideas are widespread among Russian football fans, and it is unlikely that this situation will fundamentally improve in the near future," the report concludes.

Lucky that silly old codger didn't try anything like that in Moscow or he'd probably have been beaten to death by Russian nationalists!

FARE and Sova center published a monitoring report on the issues of racism and xenophobia in Russian football / March / 2015 / Reports and Analyses / Racism and xenophobia / SOVA
According to a preliminary summary report on hate crimes for 2014 from the SOVA Information Analytical Center, 19 people were murdered and 109 seriously injured after racial hate crimes in Russia. Moscow and St. Petersburg account for half of the cases.

The same patterns of discriminatory abuse are reflected in Russian football. According to a monitoring report commissioned by the Fare network, 99 incidents of discrimination were registered including displays of neo-Nazi symbols (77 cases), anti-Caucasus displays (22) and anti-black discriminatory abuse (5). Available data for the fi rst half of 2014/15 season suggests that incidents targeting black players are on the rise.

The media representation and public opinion on racism and discrimination in Russian football, although generally condemning such behaviour, often features victim blaming and suggestions that the problem is exaggerated by the international media as a way of damaging the image of Russian football and the state.

There is little public discourse in Russia of the social aspects and role of football. It is rarely covered by the Russian media and there are few social responsibility initiatives by clubs or the Russian Football Union. With dropping attendance at matches, organised and radical far-right groups have been gaining more influence and prominence among supporters in recent years.

The role of the far-right

Recent monitoring of the Russian fan scene suggests that far-right ideas are deeply rooted and have become part of the identity of the majority of organised fan groups. Incidents of discrimination and displays of neo-Nazi symbolism are not limited to stadiums but are widely accepted within online fan forums, social media outlets and are accompanied by the production of fan merchandise which celebrates discriminatory slogans and far-right symbols.

The organised nature of far-right groups and the place of football in their identity is well illustrated by the activity of many of these groups outside stadiums and on the web. Money is often collected on supporter forums to support fans brought to justice for violent offences, including racist murders or attempted murders, they are often referred to as ‘white heroes’.

Organised far-right groups engage in violent hate crimes outside stadiums before and after matches. Cases are reported when fans participate in ‘white wagons’ – commuter train raids during which people with a ‘non-Slavic’ appearance are physically attacked. These far-right political groups actively try to mobilize members of organised fan groups to their activities on the streets.

The most prominent example features events on Manezhanya Square in Moscow on 11 December 2010, when after a far-right Spartak fan Egor Sviridov was killed in a street fight, football fans came together with neo-Nazi groups to a political rally on the square organized by radical right wing groups that rapidly escalated to attacks on ‘aliens’ and police special forces. More than 5,000 far-right football fans were reported to have participated in the attacks.

Two dead as far-right football fans riot in Moscow | World news | The Guardian
At least two people were killed after around 5,000 far-right football fans and nationalists gathered at a rally outside Red Square at the weekend, calling for the death of Russia's immigrant population.

The demonstrators, who were marking the death last week of Spartak Moscow fan Yegor Sviridov, who was shot during a brawl with several men from the Caucasus, flashed the Nazi salute, chanted "Russia for Russians" and pelted riot police with flares, smoke bombs and metal fence posts.

After the rally hundreds of protesters entered the Moscow metro where they continued their rampage, beating and stabbing passersby from Central Asia and the Caucasus, Russia's troubled, mainly Muslim, southern region. A Kyrgyz man was attacked by 15 people and stabbed to death. One central Asian man was reported to have died in hospital from his injuries following the riot, but officials have declined to comment. More than 20 people were taken to hospital. Video images showed several men from Central Asia and the Caucasus walking dazed with bloody faces.

The square on which they gathered, Manezhnaya Ploshad, was left littered with graffiti, including one that read: "Yids, get out of Russia!"

Let's be honest, as bad as racism seems in Russia it would not likely be highlighted by the British media as much as it is right now if it wasn't for the political FIFA games going on at present. If there was World Cup vote upcoming and Russia was a certain pro-England voter, the amount of articles highlighting "how racism is rife in Russian football" would likely be far less. Far FAR less
