Spurs vs Sydney FC

Another high profile name has been added to Australia’s winter wonderland of football with English Premier League heavyweight Tottenham Hotspur agreeing to play an exhibition match against Sydney FC at the end of May.

The clash at ANZ Stadium on 30 May will be officially announced on Friday by NSW Premier Mike Baird, with Spurs – beaten 2-0 in the League Cup final by Chelsea at the weekend – to bring all its big guns including rising star Harry Kane, Danish midfield wizard Christian Eriksen and highly-prized French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The duel, confirmed by government sources on Monday, comes six days after Tottenham’s final league game of the season at Everton, with the London club still in the hunt for a top-four finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Organisers, which include the NSW State Government and Destination NSW, are expecting a crowd approaching 60,000 at the venue which most recently staged the AFC Asian Cup final between Australia and Korea Republic.

Should Sydney reach the A-League grand final, slated for either 10 or 17 May, it would still be in full combat mode to take on a Spurs team led by Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The Sky Blues beat fellow London club West Ham 3-1 in a pre-season tournament in Wellington last July and was beaten 1-0 by fellow Premier League outfit Everton 1-0 at Allianz Stadium in 2010.

It’s understood Asian champion Western Sydney Wanderers pulled out of the running to face Spurs because it wanted to give its players a breather after a gruelling 12 months.

Confirmation of Tottenham’s first visit to Australia in 30 years tops off an already star-spangled winter with Melbourne to host the International Champions Cup featuring Real Madrid, Emirates Marketing Project and Roma at the MCG while English giant Liverpool faces Brisbane Roar in the Queensland capital and Adelaide United at Adelaide Oval the same month.

Spurs, who have a large Aussie fan base, competed in the 1985 world series tournament in Australia along with the Socceroos, Vasco Da Gama and Udinese, having faced the national team and representative sides from NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia in its inaugural visit in 1976.

Anyone fancy a trip out here in May? We're going to roll out the red carpet for all travellers. We're going to put on a show for Spurs.

It's great you guys down under get a chance to see them play, but I personally find these post-season games highly unnecessary. The players are tired and should be sent on their holidays. Pre-season? Why not.

Completely agree! But not going to complain about this one at all. They've been to South Africa, USA and Asia multiple times and ignored Australia so far. It's going to be awesome.

Is this the only overseas tour for THFC this year then? I was hoping to catch them again state side.

I don't know if we will be in the states again. After the announcement with AIA i'm sure it said we would be visiting Asia this year. Is AIA big in Australia? As this might cover that agreement for this year.

Agreed that it's probably the last thing the players will want to do after 50+ games, however I'm very much looking forward to it and will be there

We will be in the states next summer I would imagine, we tend to do alternate years. No way are the giving up on the US market when it is growing like nowhere else. The club have close ties with AEG plus we are supplied by under armour until 2017 so USA in pre season will definitely be on the menu for the foreseeable

Poch just talked about how he feared that Kane would get burned out, and that he didn't want him to play for England this summer, didn't he?

I realize that Pochettino is not the man behind this trip, but clubs really have to stop complaining about how their players are too tired to play for their countries when they drag them all around the world both post-season and pre-season every year.

On the back of this, OzSpurs has had a 50% increase in membership (up over 1000 now). It's going to be absolutely brilliant out here. People flying in from all over Australia, Asia and New Zealand. Absolutely buzzing.

Tickets booked , block 403 (near members bar ! ). Flying from Gold Coast on Friday , meeting a mate for the game (Aussie bloke but supports Fulham as he lived there when he worked with me). Nearer the time let me know which pub or club we are all thinking of going to . The stadium is in the middle of feckin nowhere .

Not convinced that a post-season tour is all that damaging. I imagine it's at least better than the old school version of just going straight on the lash after the season ends.

A week or so of lower intensity training, being looked after by the physios, a low intensity friendly game or two. Perhaps some team bonding or mental work post-season to help reset after the swings of the season and the conclusion. Then off you go on your holidays... I really don't think that's an issue. Particularly not in a year without an international tournament where the players should have enough time to rest before pre-season.

I also imagine that traveling has a much smaller impact during this kind of post-season slow down training than during the pre-season fitness work.

But its very different when you're dragged off into a competition or a friendly. I believe the boys will see this Aussie trip like and R&R opportunity, to wind down together as a team. No serious stuff at all.
