Modric - No Longer A Spurs Player

spooky

John Gorman
From THFC, via email:

Luka Modric says he only needs to look around the dressing room here at Spurs to understand why we are having such a fantastic campaign so far.

But he also insists that there is no need to start heaping unnecessary pressure on ourselves by talking about winning the title - at least not for the time being anyway.

Our Croatian maestro has been in scintillating form this term, featuring in 18 of our 20 Barclays Premier League fixtures, mostly from his more accustomed role in central midfield but sometimes playing off either the right or left flank when various team-mates have been unavailable. Wherever manager Harry Redknapp asks him to play though, he produces the goods, showing not only his versatility but also just what a special player he really is.

ThereÔÇÖs no doubting LukaÔÇÖs fine form has been pivotal to our run of results which has seen us lose just one of our last 18 league matches, winning 14 of them. It doesnÔÇÖt matter where Modric plays on the pitch, he pulls the strings, keeps the team playing, is always looking for the ball and can open up the tightest of defences with eye-of-the-needle type passes that most players donÔÇÖt even spot.

But in typically unassuming style, Luka is the first to pass on the credit for our current form to his colleagues in white.

ÔÇ£We didnÔÇÖt start the season well but then we brought in two great players - Scott in midfield and Emmanuel up front - and they were exactly the sort of players we needed,ÔÇØ said the 26-year-old. ÔÇ£They added even more quality to our squad and since then we have just got better and better.

ÔÇ£The season up until now has been brilliant for us but IÔÇÖm not surprised because when you look around at the players we have here now, our squad is one of the best in the league.

ÔÇ£We have great cover for every position, sometimes three players fighting for one place and that sort of competition pushes us all to play well. ItÔÇÖs one of the reasons why we are doing so well,ÔÇØ continued Luka, who revealed that he is enjoying being part of a team that is playing such stylish football.

ÔÇ£It is unbelievable to play in this team, we are playing excellent football. Winning matches is obviously important to me but even more crucial is the style of how you win those games. We are flying right now, we are winning games and the football is amazing, that makes me even more happy.ÔÇØ

Read between the lines. It's in there. Or just wait for the Daily Mail to find it.

The 'rumour' was, during the start of the season Luka had a letter of apology penned for him to be released. Never saw the light of day. Of course, pinch of salt and all that.

not good enough.

He should be put into a glass cabinet in the spurs shop and be forced to apologise and list his reasons for why he thinks he should be allowed to stay at a top 3 club!

Fact is, players these days, he's loving it at the mo but if it went belly up he'd be the first to want to leave in the summer.

In fairness to the guy, he has played so well since then. He could easily have sulked and disrupted the team.
To me that is better than an apology which would have been empty anyway. Obviously, everyone could see why he would want to go there and get 2 or 3 times his wages + Champions league. At that time you would have imagined the top 4 to be Utd, City, Chelsea and Arsenal but hopefully that is set to change now and maybe that could sway him to stay here for 1 more year.

Isn't he the same as most of us? We all want to be somewhere where we can earn more, achieve more and have a better way of life. At the start if the season Modric had reason to believe that Cheksea would again finish above us and would be the ones challenging for the title, not us. Modric would have wanted to play CL regularly, he deserves to, and he knew Chelsea were a CL regular who appeared almost certain to qualify this year.

Since then, however, we have achieved a lot more than even the boldest optimises could have seen us achieving. So now has stated that he is enjoying his time here as he likely realises that perhaps the pitch isn't greener elsewhere. We only need him to now accept the new contract and prove to us that his future is here before we will totally forgive him.

We want players to love the side as much as we, the supporters, do. Truth is that very few of them will. We will have players join who didn't have feeling for their old team. Likewise we will have players offered exciting deals elsewhere and, hard as it is to accept, they may well be tempted to move. If they do, we move on as fans who will always support the side and in the future we will have another player who we cheer for as loudly as we did the one that departed; it's football, a job for the players, a lifetime for us fans.

If Modric wants to leave now for Chelsea, then he honestly can't pretend it's for glory and trophies. If we finish in the top 4 then surely we'll have enough money to start paying out 100k pw wages?

Why would we?

We need a bigger stadium or a sheikh to pay those OBSCENE wages and I for one don't want to pay them.

It's fudging vile and I dont want any chat about pragmatism.

the sooner we have a 50% salary cap or lower the better

I dont think that would be the case. Our wages im sure is based on recurring income and not one off income. You cant give someone a 5 yr 100k a week contract based on the CL income for that specific year. As the consequences are that in year two, when youre not in CL, you will be still paying 100k out of income you dont have.

The only recurring income stream is really matchday attendance along with maybe merchandising etc
