Eric Dier

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

I think this will be regarded as a top, top signing in the future, to go with the other two good additions we've seen in this window so far.

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

I don't think it matters. People get too hung up on RCB and LCB because of FM. 90% of CBs don't really have a preference - first challenge vs covering is far more important in terms of how CBs organise themselves.

What utter tripe GB, a left footed CB playing right, is attacking any low cross with his weaker foot which is going to increase the chances of a mistake!

Any centre half I have worked with has wanted to play the side that suits, some are comfortable either admittedly (Ledley a great example), but given the choice, they all want to play the stronger side

Unless the cross comes in from the far side :-k

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

Wasn't talking about RCB or LCB, just if he's right footed or not. It has been mentioned in a couple of articles that he can play as a right full back and as a defensive midfielder. Seems strange for him to play as a right full back if he's left footed.

Either way he clearly looks comfortable with both feet.

Ok - cool.

I'm not sure if you can get away with a 6'3" DM or FB in this league really - both positions require an awful lot of mobility and agility.

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

Good addition to the squad. Qualifies as U21 this season and next, so two seasons to prove himself.

I've played CB for nearly 20 years, up to level 8, and I've never once had a conversation with a partner about who wants to go left and who right. It's always front (the bigger/more aggressive player) vs back (the quicker one). You just tend to end up on the side the CF that it is most logical for you to mark is primarily playing.

With most wide players inverted these day (even in the amateur leagues), when you cover your FB the opponent is more likely to cut in towards goal than go down the outside. Therefore as a LCB you're probably going to have to make more tackles on your right foot than your left anyway.

I definitely have a preference at FB when I get used there (oddly I much prefer LB, despite being right-footed), but sides for a CB is not something I've really come across.

If you want to compare d*ck sizes, Ive managed at step 6, just turned a job down to assist an ex prem footballer at step 5 as well, so we will have to agree to disagree

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

Whats level 8 and step 6.... genuine question.

Thanks

Basically it is 6 steps below football league (and assume GB means step 8 but could be wrong?) Its the level (step 6) the FA cup begins and you play in the FA vase.

In the grand scheme of Tottenham Hotspur, it doesn't mean jack, but I think it does give you decent knowledge of the game and doing your coaching badges on my part taught me a lot!

As a manager at that level (step6/5) do you deliberately set your CBs out dependent on their preferred foot then, Shropshire? Is that the major point on deciding your pair set up? Or do other factors come into it and if so what?

(Again, a genuine question although perhaps not the thread for it - I'm starting coaching a school team soon so looking for any higher level pointers)

I've played CB for years too at a decent level and can also honestly say I've never had a conversation about left and right, it's always about who's going to attack the ball and who will cover.

This, surely?

Whether you're playing LCB or RCB, if you're left footed then any crosses from your left you'd go with your natural foot and any crosses from your right you'd have to go with your unnatural foot or the outside of your left. The same applies no matter what CB side you're playing? I do think it's probably best that left footers go LCB and right footers RCB but this crossing thing isn't a great example of why. Unless I'm missing something. It's like wrong footed full backs, it's actually quite a positive nowadays(defensively anyway) as most opposing wingers go inside, so they're going onto your stronger side.

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

I played football once with that guy from Steps so I win.

But foot preference doesn't come into it. Yes the low crossing thing. But a right footed player is naturally going to open up when defending on his weaker side (left), so is best at left CB so he opens up for the striker to head wide, not towards goal.

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

Pochettino (Dier): "He is a young player, an under-21 international and a strong centre-back. We hope he will help us this season."

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

I would expect anyone earning millions of pounds playing football to be strong on either foot.

Re: Welcome Eric Dier!

I have won the Champions League four times on FM and currently am level 17 on FIFA so I am better than all of you.

My Ultimate Team formation has no CBs it is 2-2-2-4 I have two full backs, two wing backs and two wide forwards I call it the Hot Wings and it is SPICY
