Dejan Lovren

15 mill? A decent cb, nothing more. He is no better than Dawson imo

Are you on drugs?

No I'm not. Lovren lacks pace, is slow on the turn and is prone to lose his man. But hey he is Croatian, nice name, will cost 15 mill so I guess he must be better than Dawson

None of that is true.
He is a hell of a lot quicker than Dawson.
Is by no means slow on the turn.
Is equally as prone to losing his man as any defender in the premier league.
He is Croatian, I'll give you that.
I actually don't like the name Dejan. My name is Dan, I much prefer that.
I think he'll go for less than £15m.
And yes, he is better than Dawson.

Dawson is a very good centrehalf, but he's not as good as Lovren. I hope Daws stays, but I hope he doesn't start 38 Premier League games next season.

You're saying people should in general rate English players higher than they currently do?

I just don't think Lovren is a significant upgrade on Dawson, especially if as it looks we are looking to sell Dawson for 7 mill to Hull and spend 15 mill on Lovren.

I said the same when we shipped off Thudd and bought Capoue, and the same with selling Caulker and buying Chirices.

What's the point, unless the new player coming in is a great improvement on the one going out.

I think with regards to Thudd and Capoue, we all believed that AVB was trading in a player who didn't fit into his system with a player who did. That was how I personally saw it, although I wanted Thudd to stay. Caulker was one that forced our hand because he wanted more than we would offer (regular 1st team football) whilst Chiriches accepted the rotational role and had experience in the CL, annoying but understandable.

Lovren for Dawson is another understandable step. I love Daws, but looking at the situation without emotion, it's clear that we need to get a younger centre half in. Dawson is moving away from his prime years whereas Lovren is moving towards them. It may be a pricy move, but then again he is only a year into his contract.

I'd be happy to bring in Lovren to replace Kaboul. Lovren/Daws and Verts/Chirches as a foursome has a nice balance to it in terms of power vs cultured.

His EPL experience and past relationships with Poch and Lloris are big bonuses.

Yeah I think the relationship aspect is often overlooked when thinking about defenders. The best defensive unit isn't necessarily the 4 best defenders and goalkeepers. Its the best unit of defenders and keeper that are all on the same wave length and all play AS A UNIT.

The fact that Lovren is ready drilled for Poch's philosophy and formed a mean defensive unit with Lloris before is heavily in his favour in terms of being a good signing

How does Lovren play on the right hand side of a pair?? Am I right in thinking he plays on the left for both Croatia and Southampton?

It's not that important for the majority of CBs. Many don't even have a preference. Lovren is right footed.

Btw whilst Lovren looked good again tonight, Hector Moreno looked even better.

Moreno has been the centre half of the tournament

I like Moreno but I've only seen him in the Mexican back 3.......how does he perform in flat back 4

Would be very happy with Lovren, watched a few saints games last season and he was impressive nearly every time I saw him

Re Moreno I am always slightly cautious about signing someone on the back of a good tournament. Didier Zokora springs to mind. For me I would go for Lovren as he has played in the pl, and for Poch, he has already played with Lloris. Oh and pool want him.

Agreed.

If Poch wants him that's enough of a reason for signing him.

I agree with your point, but just to be a pedant we didn't sign Zokora on the back of a good tournament. We signed him before the tournament, Comolli already knew all about him from St. Etienne and he only had an average tournament.
