Tim Sherwood…gone \o/

Do you want Tim Sherwood to stay as manager?

I'd just like to take this moment to quote the opening post of the thread.

Whilst it seems to be the done thing around here to destroy any opinion GB holds, and whilst he (like many of us) partly brings it on himself with some fairly absolute predictions/opinions, this post turned out to be incredibly prescient.

Personally I think that it instead says more about the blinkered views of some of our fans. Don't get me wrong, I am pleased that we will have a (hopefully) strategic choice in charge next season, but Sherwood came into the hotseat and improved our results while also improving our mind numbingly boring to watch football. Sherwood did a reasonable job as a tactical fix to fill in the gap until the point at which we could make our strategic fix. He has also delivered us Europa League football via league position (which was looking increasingly unlikely under his predecessor) which may help our next manager establish our pattern of play and blood players. He also ensured that our squad was retained ready for the next manager to take charge with the added benefit of a number of youngsters having shown what they can do.

With the above in mind I would like to say thanks to Sherwood for doing a decent job during his tenure at the club, despite him having been thrown in at the deep end. I wish him success in his next role as manager.

Glad he's gone, but I still wish him luck in future endeavours, can't blame the guy for giving it a go and it didn't exactly turn out to be a horrific appointment results wise.

I agreed with 99.99999% of what he said so I am sorry to see him go.

It was not his team and he should have been given the summer transfer window to pick his own players. I would also have judged on him who he wanted to keep as there are several there who are simply not good enough.

His points per game record was very good considering the circumstances especially as it was clear a few months ago that he wouldn't be staying.

As I said, I agree with virtually everything he said and I have said similar at the pub.... However, he said it to the world and I think that ultimately cost him at Spurs. If he speaks in the same manner at West Brom he'll be fine.

Levy is the one I am angry with and that goes back to the treatment of Martin!

Results no (although I don't appreciate us being ass ****ed by West Ham 3 times in a season), but turned out to be an incredibly divisive appointment (can you think of a manager in the history of Spurs that finished in a European qualification place that 85% of people wanted out?) that was a bit of a PR embarrassment for the club.

Good luck to him wherever he goes. In terms of his overall time at the club, he seems to have a done a good job in terms of his numerous roles although his behaviour with colleagues and managers with all the rumours of briefings against AVB, outbursts and madcap press conferences leave a lot to be desired. People talking about win percentages are not basing it on true context either. He will have a smaller sample size than all the other managers and a big part of people being unhappy is not to do with win % but how we actualy play and look.

Stabilised us somewhat after the sacking but despite us scoring more goals, still we didn't actually look that great. Too slow and methodical in build up with no real team coherence and structure although I accept that needs more than 6 months to work on. However, he did preside over 2 shocking defeats to West Ham, a thrashing by both Liverpool and Chelsea and a humiliation against Emirates Marketing Project and I think we need something different. A shake up with the players, a shake up with what goes on behind the scenes as well, a manager that is comfortable with the DoF and a chairman that will allow the next person a couple of years to work at whatever the plan is and leave them to it unless we are seriously looking like being relegated.

Overall he did a fair job with us this season and should be thanked for not allowing the season to descend into a bigger farce than it has been.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

I don't think they were complicated - it's JtG who's professed to not understanding them. I'm perfectly capable, thanks.

Go on then, explain the tactics, actually I'll do it for you

1. Pass the ball around for 20 minutes in our own half

2. Make no attempt to utilise the strikers.

3. Bore the pants off the crowd and the other team for 85 minutes.

4. Give ball to Bale to score a screamer.

That just about cover it?

Explain the tactics during the Liverpool game for example

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

If I had the time or the inclination I would. Unfortunately explaining things to other people is neither a strong point of mine nor something I am remotely interested in.

Fortunately, someone has done the hard slog for me:

I'd recommend it highly.

:ross: I still laugh at the Mourinho comparisons. Literally the only similarities are they are both Portugese and both managed Porto, that's where the link ends. Oh hang on they both play crap football.

Hmmmm - I'm wondering if you're my long lost (German) twin mate?!? \o/

I have explained them a couple of pages back, in very simple terms. If you still can't understand them there's little else I can do.

I think it is only fair that we thank TS for all his efforts - he got a plum job at probably the wrong time for him, and yes he made mistakes along the way, quite few if we're being honest, borne out of his lack of experience of managing a team, but he did get us playing more attacking (if haphazard) football and we did get some good results (even if we didn't have the performances to match the fans expectations).

Onwards and upwards now though - time to close this thread out of respect to TS and the incoming manager, whoever they may be.

Woop woop

Don't know this has been mentioned yet, but he got announced for the Ledley's Legends squad last night in the 7:30 read through, but the booing was so bad (far worse than for Berbatov), that he got taken out of the squad for the 7:50 reading.

New dawn then

Jurgens are a better explanation though.... with the added bonus of explaining the tactics in 4 easy to read sentences. I'll apologise on his behalf though for missing AVB's 5th directive of pushing the defence up to the halfway line, irrespective who the opposition are or that our central defenders have no pace and the turning circles of large oil tankers. A tactic only made all the more baffling by the inverted wingers and advanced full backs so that the only two players in the defence with any pace are rendered useless when the opposition break and exploit the huge space behind our defence.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

To put it in it's most basic terms, it's high pressure (with a lot of false pressing), keeping possession, rather than overloading the attack the tactic is to wait for the right moment and then pounce with the sudden forward movement of two or three players - say Walker and Paulinho together. It's also about conserving energy and using the ball to tire the opposition. There are usually tightly controlled drills in training to cover every problem and to increase ability where there are gaps.

I like all of that as an approach. I'd love to just go toe to toe with every team, but you need to be the better team to do that, and we can't afford to be the better team without a rich benefactor.

I think motivation is massively overrated in this country - two disorganised teams, one good and unmotivated, the other **** and motivated will create an even match. If the good team is organised, skilful and well-drilled they will usually still win.

I think AVB's downfall was firstly a lack of off-the-ball movement, IMO this has been a problem with our team since the early 90s. Barring the odd top player (Berbatov, Modric, Bale) our players are very static off the ball, and that doesn't sit at all well with a possession style. I don't know what is causing it or how to fix it (if I did I'd be throwing gilets around the touchline at WHL), but it's been a problem for a long time and AVB wasn't able to fix it in his short time here.

His other downfall was a lack of patience from the fans/club/media. In his first season I think the better long-term option was to try and set the team up to play in his image. Unfortunately, that would have meant almost certainly not making the CL and making it more likely Bale would leave. So the other option was to just get the most out of Bale, go for the CL and try to work in parts of the philosophy. After Bale left he was trying to integrate a new philosophy and a whole load of new players all at once - it just wasn't going to work in the short term

I think the players we have coupled with the style AVB wanted would have gone on to be pretty good. Replace a couple of our more expensive players with the ones AVB wanted (or players more similar in style to them) and I think we could have been very good indeed.

So basically it's the players, fans and media's fault that he's an average manager?

This is the same guy that needed a pitch invasion from home fans to cover up an embarrassing result in the Russian league :ross:

Hmm but you failed to mention leaving slow defenders on the halfway line with 50 yards of space for the other team to run into and the goalkeeper having to bail out the defence time and time again.

I know it's hard for you and GB to admit he failed but one day you'll see the light.
