Charlton being sold, again

Charlton are the latest English club to come under foreign ownership with a deal agreed on Friday night with Belgian millionaire and political activist Roland Duchatelet.

The business tycoon who made his fortune in electronics is understood to have paid a cut-price £14m for the London club who are currently lying sixth from bottom in the Championship.

Addingdongs chairman Michael Slater confirmed the news on the club's official website www.cafc.co.uk on Saturday, stating: 'Very constructive discussions are ongoing which we hope to conclude soon.'

The takeover follows the collapse last month at the due diligence stage of a proposed purchase of Charlton by American sports franchise owner Josh Harris.

There was considerable urgency for a new owner to be found as London property developer Kevin Cash, who has been bankrolling Charlton, was no longer prepared to put in further funding.

Duchatelet is a high profile figure in Belgium where he owns Standard Liege, the current leaders of the Belgian Pro League, as well as founding a small social liberal political party Vivant who believe in a basic minimum wage for all.

He paid around £35m to buy Standard Liege in 2011. But fans were furious with his policy of selling the club’s best players leading to pitch invasions and demonstrations in the streets of Liege.

But Duchatelet’s appointment of unknown 38-year-old Isreali coach Guy Luzon last summer has helped turn around supporter opinion of the owner with Luzon leading Liege to the top of the table.

And Duchatelet said last month that Liege’s star striker Michy Batshuayi, a January transfer window target for Arsenal, is not for sale.

Doesn't look like he's there to splash the cash. Last thing we need are more London clubs in the top flight.

Re: O/T: Charlton being sold to Belgian millionaire

The way this season is going the London clubs in the PL could be culled so some replacements could be necessary. All it needs is Sunderland continuing their revival and three could be in the relegation spots. Fulham and West Ham seem in free-fall.

Fulham, meh. Prefer them then any away game in the North East.

West Ham, PLEASE. And let us be the one to send them down.

Hopefully he'll free up some cash for Chris Powell to sign the striker he wanted last summer - Jon Obika

Not actually bull****ting you here but i was having drinks on boxing day and one of the directors from Brighton was there and he is nailed on to go down there for their promotion push they were just waiting for him to get free from injury. I know this sounds like bull**** but well there we go.

Down with the tories evil ****, SPEND SPEND. and other left wing chants...something to do with mining etc.

If he's only a millionaire, rather than billionaire, there's not much threat of them becoming another Man C

Usmanov reported as looking to spend his ill-gotten Woolwich cash on making Charlton great again. Rather them than Everton.

Nothing against Charlton and I like the idea of billionaires splashing the cash to help smaller clubs rather than throwing obscene amounts of money at the likes of Chelsea or City.

Genuinely, why would he?!

With FFP it would be near impossible to just spend them up the divisions, and he would be starting from a really low base to try to do so.

They dont have a great stadium, or facilities, and are rather small fry in the London football scene.

Seems like one of the worst options to be looking at to me!

Just goes to show how short people’s memories are and within a generation the glory hunters of today will be brainwashing their chav spawn into following in their footsteps whilst how those clubs got to the top table will become a distant memory... just as how no one bar us Spurs fans seems to remember Henry Norris’ nefarious deeds

When PSG decided to casually spunk £200m on Neymar and £120m on an 18 year old boy that should conclusively demonstrate that FFP doesn’t mean FA. It’s just there for asthetics.

Besides which, I’m no expert on n the rule but I believe that outside the top flight the rule does not apply, and inside the top flight if you have been promoted by spending lots of cash then it means that you have extra leeway as it’s based on how much your spending increases in relation to turnover?

Also you can just do what City did and one of Usmanov’s companies to sponsor Charlton at the rate of £100m a season.

FFP seems to be a "when it suits" rule, rather that "Doesnt mean FA", IMO. As I recal, City were allowed to carry on as they were because "they were doing their best to fall in line". IE, some BS about them trying to be good, and so, ok - carry on.

BUT - Im not sure Id see that as the case for everyone.

QPR recently got fined millions on FFP, something to do with over spending when they got promoted. I think the catch is - so long as you dont come back down you get away with it (different association?) but when you come back down they are waiting for you.

The football league is actually pretty strict on FFP I think.

But - yes - the whole Emirates sponsorship thing is as blatant a "fudge you" to FFP as there is, isnt it?

Ffp ueffa has no impact except for those qualifying for Europe, the PL have their own rules as does the football league.

They are distinct things and not really comparable. The EFL is intended to stop clubs going bust and if you manage to get to the PL while breaking the rules the fine won't hit you unless you get relegated back to the EFL.

PSG narrowly passed ffp (they sold enough in the summer as Neymar and M'Bappe fee is amortised, the M'Bappe loan shenanigans were to get around maximum contract length not ffp) as long as you believe their sponsorship is valid and not linked to ownership (it is linked to the ownership).
