High Street Betting Shops

Papercut

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous...

I'm North London born and bred and there are too many appearing all over the place.

There was a florist in Palmers Green and she had such good offers to sell to a bookies but bless her, she sold to a boutique furniture shop...

That was on a tangent but only last week I couldn't believe what I saw...

Okay, I know it's a so-called fast food chain but there used to be a Wimpy in Southgate - next to the roundabout. I have pics of me at a mates birthday party over a knickerbocker glory circa 1985... Asda killed a lot of local business in the area but it at least serves to the majority of locals. But what is this Wimpy shortly to become??? A feckin Paddy Power... Great...

I hate walking past these joints and seeing people smoking outside who clearly have no interest in working (that may be unfair - perhaps they do not work 9-5).

I know it's supply and demand but really???

They do not offer character or charm to their locality (okay, they offer work) and they are preying on certain types of people (yes this also includes bored local businessmen) but we need to somehow limit the numbers - it's getting out of hand IMO.

I'm still gutted about losing another Wimpy! GRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Was in the standard this week, china town has another new betting shop.

Always thought that they should be limited, usually a sign of an area down hill.

Not happy with all the bookies everywhere but sadly in recessions bookies thrive. People gamble to try to climb the social ladders, to get rich, as careers are blocked off and little chance of success there.

Bookies always profit and so can open countless stores. Can't remember there having ever been a bookie with financial problems although I'm sure it must have happened?

Did you know that bookmaker area manager's get finders fee's for when they see an empty property.. its something like 6k. I know someone that is one.

apart from the already big competition between all the different bookies, they are also restricted to 4 FOBT's per shop. therefore, it's worth them opening another small shop to facilitate another set of 4 FOBT's.

Perfect example of government regulations having a negative, unforeseen consequences.

I don't particularly like betting shops, but I have no problem with them. They only exist because the demand for them is there. A betting shop went out of business in my town and has sat empty since

The FOBT's have been a godsend for the bookies to keep the bricks and mortar side of their business going, as the internet and betting is a match made in heaven

Sadly for everyone else FOBT's are basically evil

Basically a way to prevent stupid people from having money. They are programmed to not let you win in the long run.

Swansea full of.........99p stores, pawnbrokers, charity and betting shops .....and i can presume you can times that occurance by 100 in every high street in Britain.

I know this has been discussed before, but that's how betting works. Casino games are designed to not let you win in the long run, thats as true now as it was when Roulette was invented 200 years ago

Shouldn't the government prefer more people betting from home or online and actually make it harder to have so many of these betting shops on the street instead of it being in every kids face when they're walking down their high street.

In fact I kinda think online betting shouldn't be advertised on TV either but I guess there has to be a limit somewhere..

True, Poker is the only game where you can statistically play against a weaker opponent(s) and actually have an edge over the long-term. Any other Casino game is for mugs.

They should do but all these companies reside in tax havens and apart from employing they add pretty much nothing to the economy. If they pushed everything online, they would actually add zero to the economy.

Not all of them, no.

They're getting few and far between in the South though.

Blackjack if you can count cards.

Tried it once and nearly gave myself a stroke and the croupier had a smug look on his face like he wanted to **** himself, cos i was losing so much. But if your intelligent or can card count then you can win at that.

Or if you have unlimited money you can keep doubling your bet until you win (as long as winning pays more than double). Most casinos frown at such behaviour though. How dare we try and turn the odds in our favour.

The problem with this is that it's a massively flawed system. Let's say your bet is £50. The whole system is based around whether you win the first bet or not. If you win, you bet £50 again, if you lose you keep doubling until you "win" which is simply getting your original bet back.

Without going in to the maths of it if you get the red/black or odd/even wrong 6 times in a row (which will happen more than once every 64 attempts) you need to stump up £3200 just to win back your original £50.

Also if you look long term (i.e. you do this every day for years) you are likely to encounter a stage where you will have to put down hundreds of thousands just to win back your original £50 bet.

Theoretically you are correct, but in reality this system is useless. For anyone with enough money to do it, the amount they would win would be trivial.
