Do we still need a Modric/Moutinho/Mata-type playmaker?

Imo we are not looking for this kind of player. As someone mentioned, it's not AVBs' style. The creativity will come from the 3 forwards in the 4-3-3 that AVB seems to favour. The other midfielders are there to support in numbers together with the fullbacks.

However, when we sit back and counter-attack it seems like AVB favours a 4-2-3-1, and then it is handy with a player like VdV but with pace. For the moment I think we have enough players who can fill that role at the end of games when we are looking to just sit back or when we are trying to lure the opposition further upfield.

I think it's way more critical to upgrade on our forwards and as long as that doesn't happen it's becoming more and more likely that Bale will stay.

How do people think we're actually going to line up? Or should?

Hehe, you guys obviously play too much FM. :-"

Never touch the stuff myself anymore.

We ARE going to play 4-3-3, the question is just how people see the midfield trio composed.

A deep anchor role with a runner on either side (or box-to-box if you like)?

Should the deep midfielder be a pure destroyer, sweeper or a creative playmaker pulling the strings?

Do we have someone in the hole, your typical number 10?

Do we play a dedicated DM, a box-to-box midfielder and one AM?

Or maybe a trio of somewhat similar players that can easily switch around depending on what the opposition does?

If we're playing Capoue or Sandro it's more likely to be the first one.

agreed. but i was under the impression he was asking what we SHOULD play, as opposed to what would it look like if we did play with those guys

isnt that alot of exposure on the counter? the first one that is

In my opinion one of them should play, especially if we sign a player to play behind the striker.

Capoue/Sandro and Paulinho/Dembele should be sound enough defensively

Emphatically YES. Any one of those players would give us the extra creativity we all crave.

Banega is simply awesome but where does he fit with all our other central midfielders?

and btw we're not going to completely change our formation and structure for Eriksen :ross:

It's not completely changing our formation and structure for Eriksen. It's a condensed 433 so to get Eriksen and Lamela closer to Soldado, the full backs can take care of the width. It is the best solution.

Yes. We need more technique, and to put it simply, better footballers.

We have destructors but we havent got enough skill/quality in that team.

AVB knows that and this is why we were after william.

Well yes it is completely changing our structure. Right now we play either 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1...you want us to play a narrow Christmas tree formation. That means we're not playing wingers or wide players and instead asking our 2 attacking midfielders to play centrally and channel their attacks through the middle.

So basically we'll forget what we've worked on at pres season and what we've played the first 2 games of the season to accommodate Eriksen in a role he's familiar with. It's not going to happen and it's not the least bit realistic.

Well unless your attacking players are Lennon right and Townsend left then 2 is basically the same, well done.

they would be sound defensively if we had a base of two people marshalling that midfield while walker and rose ventured off with an AM that i am assuming has little to no defensive responsibility. looking at formation 1 it looks like on a counter the only person in the midfield primed and ready to shield is the DM...

i think if we were going to have an AM , a blatant one that is...ala bergkamp (AM/ SS)....then we would need two people primed to cover the defenders.

otherwise to have one DM i would think that we would be looking more for formation 2.
