Former England footballer Jimmy Greaves has made a full recovery after suffering a stroke.

The 72-year-old former Tottenham star spent two nights in hospital and underwent neck surgery after falling ill at his home in Chelmsford, Essex.

He has since been discharged and says he is feeling as fit as ever.

"I had a mini-stroke but just weeks later I'm honestly feeling better than I have in years - I'm as fit as a butcher's dog," Greaves told The People.

Doctors at Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital discovered the football columnist, who is England's third-greatest scorer with 44 goals, had suffered a transient ischaemic attack.

They performed a successful operation on an artery in his neck before giving him the all-clear.

Greaves added: "I'm out and about, enjoying life to the full. I lost a stone, which I needed to do and it's made me feel a lot younger.

"If anyone complains about the NHS don't believe a word of it. The people who looked after me couldn't have been any more professional or caring."

Brilliant news that he's made such a good recovery.

The absence of Spurs' and England's most entertaining player ever from the Hall of Fame rather diminishes its status somewhat.

That's a shame, especially when you consider that you have people like Steffen Freund who are in there instead.

To put Greaves' goalscoring record for us into perspective, for another player to break his record they'd need to score 26 goals every season for 10 seasons. Since the Premier League has gone back to a 38 game season, the most goals in all competitions that a player has scored for us was Defoe in the 2009/10 season with 24 goals. Now maybe with CL football next year we'll be able to attract that illustrious striker who is capable of scoring more than anyone else we've had in the modern era, but even then...how many players stay at a club for 10 seasons these days?

Wasn't he banned from the ground? And mullery? Fell out with Sugar iirc.

hmm don't think he is, even if he was by Sugar. He isn't in the hall of fame because he wanted paying for his time I believe. Hate the way Spurs have treated that poxy hall of fame.

He is a proper legend. What a fudging player and striker he was. My lord with a striker like him in our side today we would be romping the league. Get well soon Jimmy and ffs Danny get him in the hall of fame.

Just seen on the news that one of my favourite Spurs players from my childhood Jimmy Greaves has suffered a stroke. I know he had a small one a few years ago, so its probably not good news, but wish him and his family well, in these tough times
