Turns 34 in September... and has gone through hell with a liver tumour which in the end resulted in a liver transplant.

I think he will retire.

If AVB sells ABE and goes with Rose as the starter he could be decent cover for LB. Guess it depends on if Fryers is ready to step up.

"Football for me is a passion since I was a child," Abidal said. "I don't see myself quitting now. I have made all this effort to come back to play football. My health is better now. When my body tells me to stop I will hang up the boots.

"I would have liked to keep on playing here, but the club sees it differently and I have to respect that."

Still a No.. He will no doubt get a move to a French team. Besides.. you don't sign a 34 year old to warm the bench, only to stifle the young players coming through. IMO he is done at the top table of football

Don't see the point really considering his age and no clue what his fitness/playing level will be at. It's not like we are desperate at the position

On the right terms, yes. If we move Gallas on and use Friedel as just cover then there is room for an old timer to be involved with the back four. Indeed, it's youngsters like Naughton and Walker that could do with the grooming an experienced full back could offer.

The profile he would offer us would be massive and make us a much more attractive club for big stars to follow.

The right terms would be: a lower rate of pay than Barca, an understanding that he will be used on a rotation basis, and a two-year contract with insurance taken out against ill health (I don't know exactly how these things work but I for one do not like the principle of telling someone we will pay you just so long as you don't get cancer again). He can also choose between the number 3 shirt or even number 2 (Dempsey looks just lost at right back).

I give it 2 months of the season before everyone who voted "No" says "Why didn't we sign an experienced defender in the summer?"

I don't particularly care what his form will be 2 months into next season. I don't want a 34 year old, 12 months removed from having a liver transplant. Simples. Let him see out his playing career back in France... or in MLS
