The GG Excuse Summary...

Armchair Expert

Vedran Corluka
1) Last week Norwich got hammered 5 - 1 at home by Arsenal / Chelsea / Swansea / Everton / Margate. This week they turn up against as and start playing like world beaters. Why always us?

Answer: its because the team who played them last week exposed them for the dross they are and put them away accordingly. We, on the other hand, played like absolute drains with zero creativity, couldn't fashion more than one chance the whole game and threw points away against a week team whilst making them look good.

2) Why do goalkeepers always put in world class displays against us?

Answer: brick finishing makes keepers look good.

3) The fixtures always go against us: Arsenal are playing a Man Utd with nothing to play for, Chelsea are playing a Fulham team with nothing to play for blah blah blah.

Reaction: total gonad*s. This week we're playing against a Emirates Marketing Project with nothing to play for, lets see how that goes. Two weeks ago we lost to the same Fulham with nothing to play for that Chelsea dingdonged the other day. Absolute nonsense. Every team in the premier league is by default, a Premier League team. Anyone can beat anyone and situations etc. go out the window as its just a game of fudging football.

4) Player A mouthed of in the press. Now were doomed, what an idiot blah blah blah.

People seem to think that our players live on planet Tottenham and fly via fudging spaceship down to football grounds to play. All the players know each other, go on internationals together, go to each others weddings, hang out in the same bars. Press quotes are just nonsensical sound bytes demanded by the media that are part and parcel of the football soap opera.

If people think Gareth Bale saying he believes were better than Arsenal fired up Theo Walcott or Monreal or someone into heaving, foaming infuriated revenge machine they need to take a reality check.

What is VERY important is turning up on the day, playing to the best of your abilities and attempting to beat the opposite 11.

IMVHO factors that actually influence football matches are: injuries, formations, decisions during the game (managers, players and officials), the quality of the opposition players / manager and tactics.

Have I missed any more spurious excuses that get banded round here in every OMT? Probably.

Excellent thread!

5) I suppose the ref blame has to come in here - i.e. always us, blah blah blah

I think most teams have unfair decisions against them during the course of the season, and possibly some more than others (fair enough) - but this grand global conspiracy against us is laughable - reminds me of this thread which is rather frightening

6) Ade is a gooner double-agent who is purposefully out there to destroy Tottenham Hotspur and miss every goal opportunity possible

I think he's a good striker who's terribly short on confidence and still has loads to offer (especially next season), and to this day remains the closest we've come to replacing Berba 7 years later. Some of the bile floating around after the Basel loss was disgraceful (as if Hudd scored his pen!) and I feel fans have turned on him since day one and simply wait for more ammo to throw at him after every game.

8). BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO we are brick.

I am a knob who has no perspective, I do not support the team and expect to win every game - I can not remember 10 years ago.

10 - We should never have let the Bong leave.

Seriously, we'd probably have the title sewn up by now if he was here. People forget that.

All I ask for is effort from our players and the manager to be tactically adept, people moan about not being able to compete on monetary terms but we were the money club in the sixties and we did not moan then, my biggest worry is the real lack of class talented British players in football at the moment.

The one about keepers putting in world clas performances against us is the one which really annoys me when I hear it. People fail to recognise that, whilst a keep might make 20 saves against us, if those 20 shots have all been within 2 feet of him (which they inevitably are with us), then it would take a bit of a howler for us to score and frankly most of us could keep those 20 shots out

Actually, this one comes up a lot. As soon as a player is either out of the first 11 or sold by Spurs, the ability of that player suddenly seems to double in the eyes of fans because we all forget that player's weaknesses and that we were slagging him off beforehand

Why are we always cursed by the return of the former player???.... Player x never scored for us, has never scored for their new club, but player x always scores a (first) belting goal against us!!

I disagree with 1).

It assumes that the same Norwich turn up every week and play consistently the same in every game. They don't.

The rest are ok, nothing too ground breaking though.

The one about 'keepers annoys me too, but there is some truth there.

Some keepers do pull off fantastic saves against us.

Also if you take into account the stat which says we have a load of shots on target, then by its very nature keepers playing against us always look busier.

The point as made above is also spot on, we do tend to shoot straight at the keeper a lot, which is down to poor technique of our strikers/ midfielders.

You forgot the old chestnut..... Injuries

Every club in the league has injuries, some worse than others but we aren't the only club who suffer from it.

Some clubs clearly raise their games against the top 6 i.e. Norwich, Stoke.

Also, the endless list of excuses that people wheel out any time anyone questions Levy.

Thats the one that get me, every time we lose there are those who blame the refs but when we win nothing is said. Pathetic.

I always slag the ref off. 9 games out of 10 they are somewhere between bad and awful. The only conspiracy is Fergie time.
