Alvaro Negredo is, at around 20 million euros or less, a bargain. One of many though in the poorer and poorer La Liga. Sevilla is suppose to have debts of 49 million euros. Some other sources talk about a more severe 120 million plus. The behaviour of the club suggests that possibly the second figure is closer to the truth -they are clearly putting up for sale all their players, except Navas.

It is not something to critisize, what deserves disapproval is the situation that has got them there -living above their means, like most Spanish clubs.

Chairman Jose Maria del Nido is in London trying to sell Spahic, Fazio, Negredo... Negredo told us in Revista de la LIga that he admires the Premier League and the rumour mill has started

Is Negredo/Sevilla negotating with Spurs, with Chelsea?

He was considered by Chelsea before Demba Ba, but not now. Spurs ARE NOT talking to him either. So after all it might have been a wasted trip for del Nido.

Do you know who is also in London? Miguel Angel Gil, the big boss at Atletico de Madrid talking to clubs about Falcao for next summer

Tottenham are in talks over a £15million swoop for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo.

The Spanish club's president Jose Maria del Nido flew into London, via Madrid, on Thursday to discuss a potential deal for the Spain forward with Spurs officials.

Sevilla have publicly denied the purpose of Del Nido's trip to England was to thrash out a deal for Negredo.

Flying in: Tottenham are set to sign Sevilla striker Negredo

But privately, the La Liga club acknowledge the 27-year-old is likely to leave this month as they look to secure a significant cash injection from his sale.

Sportsmail understands that Negredo is looking for a four-and-a-half-year deal, worth in excess of £70,000 per week.

Chelsea are known to be interested in Negredo, but the signing of Demba Ba has made the capture of a new centre forward less of a priority for Rafa Benitez.

Arsenal and Saudi Sportswashing Machine have also monitored Negredo this season, though Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is in desperate need of a new striker after Emmanuel Adebayor's decision to play in the Africa Cup of Nations left the club with Jermain Defoe as their only recognised striker.

Celebration: Spurs fans will be hoping to see this at White Hart Lane

Negredo is a proven goalscorer in Spain, scoring 65 goals in 156 games for Sevilla - including 11 so far this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are not giving up hope on bringing Brazil forward Leandro Damiao to White Hart Lane this month.

Speaking on Thursday, Villas-Boas played down the protracted swoop, saying a move for the Internacional striker was 'unlikely'.

However, Sportsmail understands that Spurs chiefs remained in talks with their Brazilian counterparts yesterday and a deal for the 23-year-old is far from dead.

Internacional want in the region of £15million for the striker, but Spurs are trying to drive the price down

What was his record on the Sahin deal eventually - did he call it right or not?

Negredo would be a welcome addition, imv - no more than 12m though

On that Monday night Spanish show, Ballague said when you have Liverpool paying 12m for Sturridge, any deal basically under 20m looks great for Negredo.

20m would be excessive for him, imv

Sturridge is young and English - different story alltogether

I haven't seen more than 5-6 full games with Negredo in the last 5 years I would guess.

Seems good, seems to score goals.

Are there any strikers around that people feel are clearly better than are gettable for us at the moment?

Ballague gets a lot of things wrong, but he seems to have some real insight and knowledge too. I tend to ignore most of his detailed stuff about what specific clubs are doing about specific players. His overall "Sevilla need money and would be willing to deal" does seem right though.

Again seems like the kind of situation where Levy really could put pressure on someone on deadline day :)

Good player. Not the quickest, but is fast enough to hold his own, based on the two matches I've seen him play in (versus Real Madrid (win, 1-0) and Athletic Bilbao (loss, 2-1)). Would be a good deal if we could get him in for anything under 12 million quid. Anything over that is probably excessive considering we could just go the whole way and conceivably get Damiao in a that point, based on the quoted price being banded around.

Thing is in our system, we really only need a lethal finisher. Defoe proved that earlier in the season. AVB's team at Porto proved it. There Falcao only put the ball in the net. That was his job. At Athletico he's added more to his game.

Defoe's biggest problem is still his streakiness in that he'll go on a run scoring unbelievable finishes then dry up for a spell then go again. Done it through-out his career. He always still has those games where he just slices wild finishes way over the bar 3-4 times in a match.

I think Negredo would be awesome for us, but I think Michu possibly would have been too (and still could be). He just seems such a lethal finisher. Whenever I see Michu go one-on-one with the keeper you just KNOW he will score. Its a shock when he doesn't. I am starting to get that feeling with Defoe, but its still more of a relief if he finishes rather than a shock if he misses.

Liverpool transfers should not be used to benchmark anything

If they were we could sell Livermore for £20m based on that Henderson deal.
Agree that we should push hard for Negredo, who I'm not convinced is any worse than Leandro Damiao,
however it's buyers market - £12m sounds like a reasonable deal for all parties

We've not had a forward that does that since Klinsmann (albeit Berbatov, Keane, Kanoute, Rafa and Ade were/are all great players).

I'm far from convinced by Negredo. Think he has that fairweather fragility of Super Pav.

I would definitely pay the extra few million for Leandro, who is quite a bit younger too and can emerge from and eclipse Ade, rather than be a simple back-up.

So if he's in London and not Chelsea or Spurs? No one wants to go to QPR, Fulham have Berbatov. West Ham only do loans, so it has to be the Goon Squad

Would make sense. Decent enough cover/possible competition for Giroud.

Or the chairman could be here "on spec." An agreeable coupla days catching a show or 2 which could possibly trigger a bid from this country or maybe another?

Actually, just thinking about it-ain't the rest of Europe skint? Who has the money at the moment?
